That pre-season starts in 4.5 weeks time?
Every manager ever says you want to have the vast majority of your squad in place for the start of pre-season to bed players in and get them familiar with the playing style you are going to expect them to play.
I would think that would be doubly true of a squad where more than half of them are new signings.
Is it really realistic to expect Cook to get all the players (and the quality of players) he wants in that time? Given that we're going to be competing with Championship clubs to sign them as we are led to believe.
I honestly struggle to see it happening.

The transfer window isn't even open.
There is lots to do but probably best to wait until it at least can be done before becoming too negative.

Season isn't even finished yet, play off finals this weekend, other clubs have only made 1 or 2 signings at best, lots will happen in coming few weeks, stay positive, some have only just announced their retained lists, still very very early [Post edited 27 May 2021 14:26]

Jeez, have a day off! The season hasn't even ended yet! The transfer window hasn't opened yet, we've still got the Play Offs to conclude and Euro 2020/1 to happen.
It's important that Cook gets his management team and structure in place. Have faith in the process, this is a major overhaul happening and I have faith in GameChanger and Cook etc know what they're doing.
Don't compare them with years of mediocrity, incompetence under the Evans regime. It will be fine! |  | | |

But the fact remains. 4.5 weeks to virtually fill a squad roster with the best of the best league 1 can afford.
People saying lots of clubs haven't made lots of signings yet, but we have set out our stall for a COMPLETE rebuild and most other league one clubs would (i would think) see 3-4 out the door and 3-4 in. The job here is totally different.

Depends who the target are...
If you have a few of PC previous players.. they could join later in pre season with minimal disruption as they'd already know the PC way of playing.
The most important early signings are the ones who will be new to PC. New to the club itself and who require intense fitness training.
Really. You want your starting 11 all good to go 2 weeks before session starts imo. |  |

You want it though.
Cook has stressed the importance of a good pre-season with the whole group and I can understand why.
He has very high fitness goals for the team. To achieve them people need to start work as soon as.
He also has said he wants the pre-season to bake his style of play into the unit.
I assume he would be thinking that given the funds he has and the tough talking he and the new owners have done, most fans are going to have very little time for any talk of the team being 'a work in progress' when we're 4 weeks into the season. [Post edited 27 May 2021 14:43]

If I see someone mention how we lack depth in our roster to cover the players we have on our IL I will lose the plot.

My only concern is with Rhodes, Waghorn, Defoe, Bradley and others all turning us down we might end up with egg on our faces next season if we put together a weaker squad than the one we released. We can't match 3 teams in this league for wages, let alone the Championship sides. We are taking a huge risk. This also reminds me far too much of Hurst when he pointed out what Cook has, and put a sledgehammer through the team and demoralized the club. People cheered Hurst for much the same at the time and this is looking the same to me but I will try and stay positive. We've certainly loaded our back room with Cooks mates, so here is hoping we're aren't just turning into a Liverpool mates club and he's actually made this appointments to make a difference. Although hiring Jeffers is reprehensible in my view. |  |

Well. I sincerely (and I really mean that) hope you lot are giving me heaps of 'I told you so' when HMS Pisstheleague sails triumphantly into port, but at the moment I have my doubts. But don't worry, I won't say 'I told you so' or 'Be careful what you wish for' if it goes the other way as I am an extremely kind-hearted and nice person, who probably deserves more recognition but is ok with the hand life's dealt me and just isn't like that. xx | |
