Off-road driving practice for the elderly? 11:46 - Jun 25 with 792 viewsNthQldITFC

Is there anywhere in the Ipswich area where you can take an older person who hasn't driven for a while to have a little go at driving to see if they fancy it again? Uninsured and not full of boy racers preferably. I suspect the only doughnuts (note correct sp.) involved will be jam ones with a nice cuppa afterwards. PM if you prefer not to publicly suggest somewhere, I can always post it later! Ta.

How about a supermarket car park for starters? Have to keep your wits around but nice and slow to get into it again.

I took my kids to practice at Eye Airfield, not sure if you can still do it though as they toughened up on security. Might be a bit far out too. Just a thought for you.

Yeah I was going to say a supermarket carpark on a Sunday post 4pm probably isn't a bad shout.

Alternatively the opposition penalty area last season barely saw any traffic at all, but not sure it's big enough for handbrake turns.

The old A12, off copdock is always mega quiet, and barely any cars are there either, did the majority of my lessons up and down that road

I wondered about supermarket car parks, but wouldn't you 'need' insurance for that?

Manningtree train station car park is empty all the time at present.
Heart’s Delight or indeed the Station Buffett for refreshments after!

You will need to pay “parking” though as there are cameras up now.

Not sure, but I would have thought that car parks were private property rather than public highways so maybe uninsured drivers can try out there?

Public space though aren't they.

I wouldn't risk no insurance on one of those.

Gotta be an airfield as already suggested.

An old, disused one, not somewhere like Gatwick.

Great advice - don’t go near a busy airfield.

If they have a license, am sure a driving instructor would be more than happy to take them out for a couple of hour refresher.

That would seem the most logical for insurance and safety purposes (dual control).

Most would be happy to have you in the back seat.

My thought would be that if said older person is not too sure, is this perhaps the best idea, given their reactions etc will progressively slow down.

Public car, supermarket and pub (etc) car parks are deemed public spaces so I am not sure if your insurance would cover him/her

I assume the car is insured but not the driver?

If so, you could add them to the car insurance for a day or two.

I took a girlfriend to Eye airfield many years ago for her first driving lesson and she almost took out a microlight in a similar fashion.

I'm not sure who would have been to blame technically, but in our defence you'd have thought it would have been far easier for him to spot us than the other way about, dropping from the sky as he was.
