I know I'm in a minority..... 10:54 - Oct 4 with 8197 viewsblueysbackside

....but the season for me started when Morsy and Celina were fit - and Cook was able to field what is arguably his strongest XI. What took place last season and early this season is an irrelevance to me - and I've posted before the reasons why. What he needs now is until Xmas to get this lot into a well-oiled winning machine. If we're still where we are now, I'll admit defeat. Until, then, however, he's still the man for me.

He may well have targeted him in August, we don't know. He may have been the first player he wanted when he sat with Ashton for talks on new signings. Now that he has him - and others - I wait to see a reaction. I'd go as far as to say he - and AShton - were willing to write off the first month of the season until all the outgoings and incomings took place. I wouldn't be surprised if Cook lasts the whole season.

He was very much towards the top of the list early on but the point is he wasn't looking at all likely to come until the very last moment. Not at all convinced they had an alternative.

We have comfortably good enough players not to rely on either of them but we're nowhere near the level we need to be at in terms of motivation, tactics, game management etc. He wont' have more than a few games if we lose them.

A great post. Agree with all of it.

The fact of the matter is, if we stay with the current manager/coaching team we will more than likely finish around 10-14th (mid table) personally I don't think that is acceptable...

Definitely with you on last season - totally and utterly irrelevant. Day 0 for the Cook regime was the start of this season for me, with the caveat that the unknowns involved in integrating a new squad should allow an extra month or two of leeway. So I am still totally supportive, but starting to get a little worried.

I'll keep my 'little worried' under my hat for now (unless I am broadcasting it on a forum!), because we need to give support and understanding to the new regime whilst we can, after only six months or so in the job, with an extraordinary turnover of players and a difficult underlying situation. Equally they need to understand our collective angst given the years of failure here, and the embedded negativity and almost expectation of failure and feelings of being cursed that we seem to have.

So a little more tolerance both ways for me, but the clock is certainly ticking, and Father Christmas really does need to bring us a top half and pushing position.

Sorry why is last season irrelvant?!! When Cook took over we was 6th in the play off places.
He was given a free ride last season as he threw the players under the bus, not Cook's fault at all of course.

I suppose that’s where l differ from most fans. In that I believe we will go up next season and that this season is all about bedding in players and a new change of ownership.

Amazing how content some are to write off a third season in the third division. I hope the owners and management are more ambitious than our fan base, the level of investment suggests they are. Seems mad to have splashed out on 6 expensive loan signings when the aim this season isn't to go up.

I think I feel that way because I don't look at it from a personal Paul Cook perspective, but from an Ipswich Town perspective. If you take the former view, you can say "yes, he failed last season and he is failing again, he's no good, get rid". But from an ITFC perspective the team failed last season largely because of what it had become over several years, and Paul Cook was just a small part of that at the very end.

I think we're too quick these days to look for a scapegoat and make it personal.

Coming in and doing a worse job than Lambert wasn't great though. He came in talking a good game about taking us up and he got nowhere near that. Our run in was pretty kind as well, more or less all bottom half sides, and he couldn't muster even a hint of an improvement. The worry is that some performances this season, especially away from home, have been very similar to some of those performances at the end of last season and that makes those performances feel relevant.

And Wigan have 15 new players and are in the top 2. The bottom two divisions are characterised by high squad turnover. The aim this season was promotion, we're a few bad results from being able to kiss that goodbye. Should that happen, Cook has failed and has to go.

... is how important the bond between manager and fans is (as well as players and fans)

I could not agree more on this.. it builds confidence and resilience and a positive atmosphere

Its been an achilles heel for Town for a LONG time.. mainly in part to manager appointments made by Marcus, and their character and capability

I thought Cook, and still believe in part, was the right guy: honest, someone who lives and breathes football, understands the fans, and understand the lower leagues, excellent record at this level. His interviews are such a breath of fresh air..after years of dross on this front

BUT, Cook HAS to start delivering.... to make that bond with fans stronger and enduring, he lost a vocal minority on this board in his dealings with the legacy squad, and that goup drifts further away. Cook has also stated there would be no more lacklustre performances... Accrington was one such, and there have been a few.

Shrewsbury has to see a high energy and good shape performance, and then we need to go on a run - even without Morsy and Celina there is enough quality to be, by this point in the season, winning week in week out

We should be competitive in Division 3 ffs. This acceptance of mediocrity is baffling.

There's a weird misconception that if you feel Cook will work longer-term you are simultaneously happy with the league position and accepting of defeats like the one we have just witnessed to Accrington? The two aren't mutually exclusive.......

Results before those two came into the team were poorer than the ones with then in it, innit. Incapable, no. But I’d say Celina brings a creative spark we lack while Morsy is a more defensive-minded midfielder than both Evans and Harper.

Well who bought all the other players then? If Fraser, Chaplin, Burns, Aluko and Edwards to name a few aren't creative enough for Div 3 then what have we filled our squad with?

I assume some of the loans were with a view to permanent moves? ie building for the future rather than one hit at promotion. I am v happy to write this season off as I strongly believe we won’t be at our best until nest season - with or without Cook. Some find that depressing. It is.

Ashton did, presumably with input from Cook. We can argue all day about whether they were the right players. Time will tell. People in here assume we will walk this league/get promotion. It ain’t gonna happen this season

The only way any of the loanees stay permanently is if we go up, so we're back again to the owners and management having higher expectations than you for this season.

We don't expect to walk the league and win 6v0 every game but surely we must expect u to be challenging to go up? surely play offs must be expected this season?? why should we write this season off

Too many of us want instant gratification. And I have been guilty of that, too. Statements such as ‘we should be competitive in this division’ are presumably based on us buying ‘premium’ players. Well having premium players doesn’t mean you’ll go up. Fact. And before someone else pops up with ‘yes, but HE bought them’, I would just say again that I’m behind him until Xmas. And I’m sure someone else will say ‘but surely we should be doing better?’. Buying the best doesn’t guarantee anything.

Hi Homer. What I find more worrying are those among the fanbase who want him out and are moaning about ‘free passes’. He needs time. The season is 10 games old. The green shoots of recovery were shown at Lincoln. No surprise that coincided with Celina’s return. And then the 6-0. Yes a blip (another one) at the weekend. We need to show patience

At present the 6-0 is the blip.

I don't think you can say he has made us more solid. What's that based on? It's a two game sample, one of which was a loss to Accrington in which we showed a familiar soft underbelly. The other was a home game against a knackered, bottom of the table Doncaster who showed about as much threat as a fluffy kitten that's been de-clawed. I think for the more positive fans, there's an awful lot of confusing what we want to be the case with what has actually been happening.

And it was a bit of a worry for the first 20 minutes of second half against that knacked Donny side .
