How it works: Levelling Up. on 13:29 - Nov 18 by Swansea_Blue | Remember when earlier this year they used HS2 as justification to cut Transport for the North’s 2021/2022 budget by 40%? Arf. https://www.railway-technology.com/news/tfn-budget-cuts-receive-criticism-uk-rai If anyone believes this levelling up nonsense is a genuine attempt to redress inequalities across the UK, they're 2 sarnies short of a picnic. A cross cross-party public accounts committee enquiry found the previous Towns Fund to be politically biased, favouring Tory councils. The Levelling Up and Community renewal funds recently announced have been similarly criticised. Meanwhile places like Cornwall, West Wales and the Valleys and ?South Yorkshire are losing access to £100s of millions between them that they would have got through EU Structural Funds. I think Wales alone lost out on over £300m this year. |
Cornwall has been given £3m to replace the £60m EU funding. This is despite the MPs here (5 of 6 at those in office at the time voted leave) insisting the Tories would match the money. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-55359891

How it works: Levelling Up. on 12:35 - Nov 18 by footers | If you take away people's money and access to services it makes them work harder. Wonder if the same could be said of MPs and Lords? One to ponder. |
I think I need to make another Johnson diagram.

How it works: Levelling Up. on 15:38 - Nov 18 by Cotty | I blame the people on the left amplifying the right wing media trope that everything is the fault of the Labour party. |
Fill your boots. I blame low standards in the public debate, almost exclusively populated by centrist duds and the right-wing loons. The left wing aren’t there last time I checked. If they were then maybe we’d be talking about how the underlying socio-economics of Blairism and “Johnsonism”are both flawed and regressive. And where we should be a lot better now that we know better.

This approach of idealistic absolutism will only result in further Tory governments.

Yeah, that’s exactly what it is. Keep sticking your head in the sand about how successful this brand of centre-right politics has been over the past few decades. “More of the same” is as idealistic and narrow as it gets.

Erm, I'm probably as left wing as you are. I'm going on strike 1-3 December and everything!

Indeed. But often the best approach is not to demand the exact thing you want, but to do everything you can to get the lying corrupt bigots out of power at any cost. I mean it's game theory really. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yeah. Only problem is that I think the Labour right are awful too. Lying, corrupt and ultimately dangerous. They just want to get paid too. I want Scotland out if they’re the alternative. And I’ll push for the Greens in the UK in the hope that their polling can shift policy even for purely cynical, electoral reasons. But I’m not going to make a Hurst vs. Lambert decision.

It's odd then that there aren't more Labour MPs getting paid to lobby for private interests, if that is what their desire is. Most Labour MPs with second jobs are advising the third sector or doing paid work to maintain professional registration. Compare that to outside work undertaken by the Tories and there's quite a contrast to be observed: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/nov/16/mps-who-could-be-affected-by-bo I'm interested too in this Labour corruption, can you offer some examples of what you mean by this? They don't seem to be funnelling public money to their mates as far as I can tell. Don't get me wrong, Labour aren't exactly inspiring right now. But your view that they are basically the same as the Tories and worthy of, from you at least, more criticism as a result doesn't stand up to much scrutiny.

I mostly vote green whenever a vote for Labour doesn't have a good chance of deposing a Tory. When the system is stacked against you, you have to play smart.

If you don’t think Keith Stammer is terrified of being called a socialist by the papers then you’re paying even less attention than you normally seem to be.

Don't do the whole Keith thing, it's fully cringeworthy.
