2021 World Chess Championship 13:30 - Nov 25 with 4232 views | StokieBlue | I know that chess isn't for everyone but for those that like it the first world championship in 3 years starts tomorrow. It's Carlson vs Nepomniachtchi and below is the 538's take on the match: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/as-chess-booms-magnus-carlsen-returns-to-de Chess has experienced a boom during the pandemic seeing a surge in popularity in both playing and watching tournaments. This has been helped by the rapid format being the preferred format for online tournaments where each player gets 15 minutes or less for their moves. The prize money has also increased with it's popularity, the winner of the world championship will take home 1.2m USD. SB

I am particularly intrigued by that Golf-Boxing lark. Where they have a 2 minute bout at the end of each hole or something. I think that's right.

2021 World Chess Championship on 21:28 - Dec 10 with 1403 views | yorkshire | 1991 Southend Junior U14 Chess Champion here !! Ipswich used to be a hotbed for junior chess back in the late 1980s / early 1990s - clubs across the town and hosting chess tournaments at the civic center with 300-400 players I play gameknot which is pretty decent but not really followed much live chess for years

Actually - an Ipswich Town link as well - John Eastwood, chap who co-wrote the book ‘The men who made the town’ was a chess player and took me to a tournament once - on the way back we were discussing Ipswich and he gave me a copy of his book which was my prized possession for a long time and I still have somewhere

2021 World Chess Championship on 23:52 - Sep 21 with 1171 views | The_Romford_Blue | I still don’t know the rules. And I still haven’t a clue what’s going on but sometimes after a smoke these chess videos are actually the best thing ever to watch when looking to chill out. Purely from this thread when stokie created it a year ago. And yesterday I stumbled upon the recent drama. What’s going on I’m not sure but I then saw Karlson has quit the rematch. Pure drama but I’m not entirely sure what it’s about. Anyone following it and care to explain?

2021 World Chess Championship on 00:08 - Sep 22 with 1155 views | Churchman | Thanks! I will have a look at that. I love chess. Great game. I used to play a fair bit years ago in my yoof - when time allowed, having learnt quite young. My little travel chess set was a regular companion back in the day. I still have it along with a couple of full size sets.

Short version is that Carlsen (current world champ - #1 in the world since 2011, arguably the best player of all time) lost a game to Niemman who is a younger upstart in a surprise to everybody. Carlsen has not formally said it, but his actions have indicated that he believes that Niemman cheated (either whilst at the table or through obtaining info on Carlsens preparation). Carlsen has since withdrawn from a tournament and resigned after one move in another when his opponent was Niemman. Carlsen is not known for withdrawing, or being ars3y about losing to another player, even youngsters. So his behaviour is indicative that he believes that something foul is going on.

Good summary. A few important points, Niemann has admitted to cheating online using an engine in an interview after Carlsen withdrew but said it was only when he was 12 and then again when he was 16. A few days later Chess.com issued a statement saying this was downplaying the true scale of his cheating online and as such they had said him evidence and banned him again from the platform. Last night Carlsen gave his first interview since he withdrew (after an amazing performance in the qualifiers of the latest tournament) and whilst he refused to comment specifically on the subject (he said he couldn't at the moment but will soon) he did drop a bomb that Niemanns mentor was doing a great job (previously Niemann had been reluctant to say who this was). Carlsen named him and it was a well know US GM who has been previously banned for cheating and also used to investigate cheating and is on record as saying it would be easy for a Super-GM to cheat. You're right about Carlsen, he's not known for caring about losing even if it is infrequent. I think one problem which was raised by Aronian two days ago is that he was playing Niemann and he made a bizarre/ridiculous move and suddenly Aronian was psychologically affected and played poorly from there as he was confused by the move and I guess thought about whether Niemann was cheating with an engine because the move made no sense. Still a lot to come out on this over the next week or two. FIDE are also going to make a statement in a few days around the same time as Carlsen so I suspect they are in talks. Could well be around taking online cheating more seriously and banning people caught from over-the-board tournaments. SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Aha interesting. I had read about Niemman previous brushes with the cheating brush but I didn't realise that is mentor had history as well. Will have to go and watch Carlsens interview. I have played chess throughout my life, and have used chess engines when playing against computers or reviewing games to give me ideas and to try and improve my game. Sometimes the suggested move is so random and out of context that it stands out by a country mile. It does feel like there is cheating going on, sadly. Will be interesting to see what the the next few days bring. Chess - the new rock and roll 😉

More details emerging today. Nepo has released a podcast (for those who don't know he was Carlsens opponent in the last World Championship match) and said that when he heard Niemann was the replacement at St. Louis that he asked them to implement extra anti-cheating measures but they didn't until after Carlsen withdrew from the tournament. He also said he suspected Niemann of cheating against him online fairly recently. It seems possible that Nepo and Carlsen spoke about Niemann and the security measures and when none were upgraded he withdrew in order to force the hand of the authorities. A lot more GM's coming off the fence now with their suspicions. SB
2021 World Chess Championship on 11:11 - Sep 23 with 925 views | itfcjoe | I read a story last week where Carlsen withdrew from a match against a young kid called Hans Nieman who has a reputation for cheating in online games, they both had to be fully searched before games but Carlsen was convinced he was cheating The rumour is that Nieman had some sort of anal beads in that were telling him which moves to make....! EDIT - posted this before reading that the thread was old and this had been recovered [Post edited 23 Sep 2022 11:15]

2021 World Chess Championship on 22:27 - Oct 4 with 821 views | StokieBlue | For anyone interested in the ongoing Chess cheating saga, Chess.com have given the WSJ a 72 page report about Nieman's cheating on their platform for review. They state he cheated in more than 100 games including rated and money tournaments and they believe he cheated in at least 6 games over the board which they will refer to FIDE. Not looking good for him, seems the best Chess player in the world was right with his suspicions. SB
2021 World Chess Championship on 08:24 - Oct 13 with 685 views | StokieBlue | Another update on this. It's now very clear that Niemann cheated in online chess, however the metrics for over-the-board (OTB) chess are looking pretty bad for him. Before he beat Magnus and the 30 minute delay in broadcasts was started: 15W, 15D, 5L After he beat Magnus (with black) and since the 30 minute delay: 1W, 7D, 5L Quite a massive difference. All totally circumstantial of course but he's been regularly losing to people he should beat if his ELO rating was accurate. We will see what those numbers look like in 6 months time. SB
