Watching an old Big Match ... **sigh** 11:15 - Dec 19 with 2036 viewsKeno

I love the old North Stand, I wonder it it could be put back to a single tier 'top' type stand
some of the tackles are a bit tasty
I'd forgotten how hard it was to get booked
pitches are crap

Gerry Harrison is nearly as good as Brenner, and my 2nd favourite ever commentator

and didn't we play lovely football

Original plan was to have a 'KOP' style North Stand, but the people who live behind the ground protested against it.

I was always a churchman sitter, but the noise that came from the Northstand was just incredible, it just carried across the ground so well.

I was there through the 70's, was even one of the 38010 (although like many I suspect it was a few more)

Always wished I was around in that Era, I got to see the Burley years, but in no way compares to the 70/80 years.

What difference would it make to them? Because it extends out further?

I think it was a mixture, lack of light, removal of the road, potentially the request to purchase some of the homes to enable the road to be moved and rebuilt etc.

the kop style stand would have extended back as far as the houses IIRC, so would have taken away the road, pictures get posted every so often of it.

but I dont think it was impossible to build a single ramped style stand in the footprint they had available which wouldnt have impacted the houses, or any number of options including moving the pitch, as weve done several times before and whilst they were building it in fact it that season the goal line was moved about 5 seats in on the Pioneer/West stands. it just would have taken a bit more time in design thinking, and they wanted it done quickly (cheaply some might argue) so we got what we got.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I was at the base of the Cobbold (East) stand for the 38,000 Leeds game. It was standing in those days and it was so jammed that as a smallish teenager, I saw very little but I was there!

From the late 70s on it was mostly Churchmans (obviously) for me with the odd game in other parts of the ground. I did all 2000/01 in North Stand. I loved it, but after the rebuild my dad needed a seat so until he was unable to go to games it was the lower or middle tier of the Pioneer (West) for us. Not my favourite, but the half time practice pitch stroll was a bonus.

I actually don’t think there’s anywhere in the ground I’ve not stood or sat. I really liked Churchmans in the ‘Standing’ days, with my dad especially, but I have to say North Stand was always the most fun.

Some very dodgy things went on at the back of the North Stand, sometimes between men and women! .
I used to stand on the left side half way down in our group - the atmosphere was fantastic in the North!

Made me think, I've been pretty much everywhere in the ground but as far as I can recall I've only ever been in the Cobbold twice, once for St Etienne in '81 and the second time ror REM. Both times very close to each other actually.

I swapped my scarf with Frenchman, still got a St Etienne scarf somewhere.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Me to only once. It was Millwall at home. Ended up being escorted onto the pitch as they were ripping seats up and throwing them.

One of the first games when the extensions were added to the Cobbold was the 5th Rd Aston Villa game in 75. We actually sat in with the Aston Villa fans for that game - I’ve no idea why. The lower section was quite a good viewing point for young teenager so we often stood there in the early to mid 70s. There was a little hut at the back of the terrace on the halfway line and in front of that was a decent place.

We sat in the main section of that stand for the first time in many years a couple of years ago. I couldn’t believe how tight the seats were (too many pies) and lack of knee room. Narrow access, the stand showed its 50 year age.

Even worse was Arsenal’s old Highbury main stands. We sat in those for the Ipswich game in the early 90s (a 0-0 snore fest) and they were built for midgets. Compare these experiences with Spurs’ new ground or even Wembley now and you can see where the future lies. The old Cobbold/East/Portman stand has to be replaced or upgraded at some stage in the future.

I remember Burnley at home in the early 70s. I was a kid about 12 and with some mates going into the old East Stand paddock. Some Burnley bovver boys asked where all the Ipswich hard nuts were. We said up the North Stand. They then nicked my scarf and I've hated them ever since.

I was taken too the Amex shortly after it opened and being asking what I thought simply replied 'its a bit soulless it lacks the smell of despair and stake urine'

My host, who is involved in the hierarchy there wasn't impressed
