2019 Tory MP defects to Labour on 14:23 - Jan 20 by C_HealyIsAPleasure | Balance of votes? Labour increased their vote count by c2k in 2015 compared to 200 by the Tories, and a % increase as outlined by GB. In 2017 they did get a further jump but the Tories gained 5,000 votes too, and then won the seat in 2019. Pretty evident where that turnaround happened, and it wasn’t under Milliband as much as you might want to pretend otherwise |
Not that Bury South is "red wall" but the two Corbyn elections were two different stories in those seats. In 2017, the Tory vote went up significantly but Labour still held on to most of those constituencies because their total rose as well, albeit by a smaller margin. In 2019 the Tory vote barely went up in pure numbers, the difference was the Labour vote didn't turn out and bombed massively. I don't know if there's any data but it wouldn't surprise me if there were more direct Labour to Tory switchers in 2017 than there were in 2019. Dennis Skinner's old seat here as an example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolsover_(UK_Parliament_constituency)

Yes agree with all of that, I was just countering the suggestion (lie) that the rot in Bury South had set in before Corbyn, which clearly wasn’t the case

2019 Tory MP defects to Labour on 14:24 - Jan 20 by Pinewoodblue | I didn’t get to attend my Mother’s funeral ( death not Covid related) nor funerals of friends who died of Covid but I share you views on partygate.it really is a side show compared to so many more important things, such as the ruling that the Handing out of PPE contracts was unlawful. |
The PPE contracts are crazy. If an MP knew of a company that could import them pretty quick and even if it was their brother then why not fast track them - we were all crying out for PPE. What happened in some cases however was new start ups being fast tracked which was 100% wrong. As soon as Covid hit Italy I was offered an unlimited supply of masks from China and I went through the rigmarole of supplying the NHS - filling online forms in etc etc. I can't actually remember if I was asked for a price but I would have done them at cost. My offer was turned down, I then thought about importing a load anyway but didn't really want to make any money out of a pandemic so decided against it. Eventually i bought in 20,000 and sold them at pretty much cost price to people who wanted them. I did the same thing with hand gel. StickyMockwell is in the game and he made a load up for me - and no one had hand gel at the time! I can't remember how many bottles we had, under 1000, I can't remember. Again, I either sold it pretty much at cost or gave it away - in fact a few TWTDers wanted some and I delivered it at no charge for the product. When I hear about all the goings on two things immediately spring to mind, why would you want to make money out of a pandemic and what makes you think you can (as a government minister) fast track for profit. Maybe I'm soft but I really don't get it. A lot of people have made a lot of money out of COVID.

I think it si because the old maxim holds Some enter Parliament to help others, and some to help themselves As an M your actions would be of the former - you don't have to look too far to see who makes up the latter group [Post edited 20 Jan 2022 17:37]

It's those who just put themsleves in the middle of deals with no expertise at our expense that is pretty sickening. My mother in law runs a school uniform factory, they were making as many gowns as they could for the NHS at less than cost price to just give to them and schools etc, couldn't get on the lists but weren't really worried and then people are setting up businesses just to act as middle men and making millions whilst the experts couldn't get heard no matter how hard they tried. It's grubby, and shows a contempt for the public.

2015 was a weird election all round. Labour did well in England and made modest gains but obviously that was wiped out and then some by the SNP in Scotland.

Agree with you and Lucan. If MPs genuinely knew good experienced suppliers to get PPE quickly then that’s no problem, it’s just the stuff like Matt Hancock’s mate from down the pub with no previous experience getting a contract which p1sses people off.
