Celina was excellent today 18:33 - Jan 22 with 7010 viewsDubtractor

There are a few on here who, inexplicably, don't see what he does for us. Today should have shown them the error of their ways.

So much of our best football went through him, and I thought it was probably his best performance since rejoining. If we can get him performing like that every week we'll turn over a lot of teams.

Burns also missed 2 chances, 1 where he tried to hit it first time and blazed over, he had so much space should have taken the touch and then placed it. 2nd one blazed over again when if rolled along 6 yard box Chaplin was totally unmarked at back post with a tap in. However he’d already buried one on the first touch so not overly surprised he tried again.

We let them dictate and push us around for most of the 1st half we gave them very little in the 2nd half. It was interesting to see us take such a high line for free kicks were not letting them get balls into our box if we could help it.

Some of their free kicks towards the end were bizarre to watch.

Walton at one end, their keeper taking the kick, then a row of 20 players 40 yards from our goal. We had very clearly set up to try and ensure that the scrap for the ball was far enough out that it couldn't hurt us.

Man of the match. Saying something considering he's not a great tackler, and when the second half saw us winning more second ball and getting to grips with Stanley's cynical approach to the game, which saw us through. He didn't need to be overtly physical, just did what he's best at. Excellent player, far too good for the third division.

But shows how much Mckenna thinks as a coach. Clearly he'd got the players to keep a high line to try negate their aerial threat in the box late on.

SB you're entitled to your view as well as others with theirs

The stats you put out. 16 games 4 goals 4 assist to prove your point. That includes 1 game where he scored 2 goals and had 2 assists. So the remaining Is 15 games 2 goals 2 assists, its therefore not a surprise he is someone which splits opinion. You seem to take it personally that people have their own views on him.

You'd be right if it was just me saying it but you've got a whole thread of people saying it and a few people basing opinions on a predetermined narrative they formed before he joined. Other players contribute far less in matches but are never subjected to the same criticism and it's a clear double-standard from a small minority.

The first number of those games he was recovering from a serious covid condition, some of them were also sub appearances. You wanted to send him back to France which was just another of your ridiculous hot takes.

I'll tell you what though, that pass yesterday must have looked sublime on the radio.

Celina is one of, if not the, best players at the club. How others have a hard time seeing this I do not know. Oozes class and if everything was right with the world he wouldn't be here with us.

I know you really wanted to send him back but that's like rejecting a steak dinner in favour of McDonalds. Enjoy him while he's here.

There's a fair mixture on this thread actually SB. Interesting how those who don't agree with you have predetermined narratives tho.

I don't think there has been any players who haven't been subjected to critism.

There really isn't much of a mixture on the thread, the vast majority seem to think he contributes a lot both going forward and in closing down and should be playing.

Perhaps you are reading on the radio as well?

It's not about not agreeing with me, it's about having a predetermined narrative. I'll give you an example: I hadn't formed an opinion on KM before the press conference but you had already formed a predetermined narrative that he was smarmy and you waited for about 1 minute before you put it out there for everyone to see.

Hopefully that clears things up for you on how these things work.

We've manged to sign Walton perm and extend Bonne so no financially no need to send him back. ( which was the only reason I mentioned sending back if needed for financial reasons)

I think everyone knows what he does and what he is capable of I don't see anyone saying any different. There's the personal opinion of his full contribution through a game. Popping up stats to show he does what everyone is already aware of doesn't change that.

I’m one of those who isn’t /wasn’t completely sure about Celina’s contribution to the team. He’s won us games and turned around games ( yesterday’s and Wycombe away), but he has been anonymous at times. The obvious stats might look good, but when he’s closely marked he tends to get knocked of the ball easily. Stats don’t pick that up. I don’t think he’s lazy, but he’s unlikely to win a 50-50. Doesn’t matter if his high-end game results in goals, but it doesn’t happen every game. If he were better at his all-round game he’d probably be in the PL.

Big Mac picked up on that yesterday in the post- game interview.

On Celina’s ball through for Burns’s goal, he added: “A really good pass. Everyone knows about Santi, his quality and what he can do with the ball.

“The big things for me, what we’re working with him on and are trying to develop in him is stuff off the ball. His aggression, his work-rate, his running, his pressing, he’s definitely capable of it, he’s shown that today.”

Yes, he was excellent yesterday and it did look a more complete performance from him, rather than individual pieces of brilliance.

I think it would also be fair that you can not form an entirely accurate narrative from stats and ifollow coverage. If he carries on like yesterday I will not be hoping and asking for more.

Why would you care what KM says?

He's smarmy, in fact he's a "smarmy git" according to you so it's interesting that when you think his views suit your position they are suddenly valid.

It's interesting that KM has picked him as soon as he's fit enough to start, it would suggest that whilst he is happy he's contributing other things and they will work on them in training he was also happy with his contributions going forward anyway.

I still think it's a predetermined narrative for some, you've not proven otherwise. The main part of his game is to unlock defences, not win 50/50's. I don't see many saying that Morsy or Evans should be unlocking defences with mazy dribbles and defence splitting passes, a clear example of where he's held to a double-standard that some don't hold other players to.

Suddenly valid? When were they not valid? You can't just make stuff up SB

It's not interesting at all really. It's exactly what the previous manager did. And it's exactly what most people say, that you want celina in the side because of what he can do with the ball but there needs to be more from him off it. If off the ball stuff wasn't a problem. They wouldn't be working with him to get better at it would they..
Time to accept its OK for people to like celina but wish he did more off the ball.

Also regarding Morsy etc. There has been threads about his lack.of.forward thinking and Evans, plenty of threads on his contributions or lack of in some games.

Moving this discussion sideways slightly it was really good to see McKenna set the side up to get both Chaplin and Celina centrally.

The formation wasn't really something I've seen us play before but it's great to see Chaplin back in the side. He seems to pick up them pockets and gaps in and around the box. Harsh to leave Norwood out but I'd always start Chaplin if fit.

i've watched that goal about 20 times now things i noticed, and that when all pieced together, make a brilliant team goal.

- wolfs calm headed to chaplin from defending a corner
- chaplins brilliant touch, vison, and ball to celina
- KVYs run to take the man away from celina, opening up space
- morsys run to do the same
- burns just getting head down to run the length of pitch
- celinas ball through
- burns finish

Yep and for the second goal we had so many passes and the only time they touched the ball was to foul Morsy. Two quality goals
