The hypocrisy of the Russian administration is indeed striking in this matter: 'Russia's ambassador to the US criticised Mr Biden's decision. "The cruelty and cynicism with which Washington has approached the issue of transferring lethal weapons to Kyiv is striking," Anatoly Antonov was quoted as saying by Tass news agency. "Now, by the fault of the US, there will be a risk for many years that innocent civilians will be blown up by submunitions that have failed."' From https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-66140460 No mention there that Russian forces are also using cluster bombs. And the Human Rights Watch report on land mines did note that Ukraine is making efforts to discontinue their use when it poses a significant risk to civilians. But all the problems of an escalated war remain, we all know that once this is over there are going to be people walking the street of Eastern Europe on crutches or less obviously with prosthetics fitted, and some of those will be children.

If the children weren't stolen and deported to Russia of course. If we'd given Ukraine air superiority we likely be in the position of the Americans weighing up cluster bombs.

How far back would we have had to planned providing Ukraine with fighter aircraft ? Unless you think we should have sent the RAF in, which brings us back to escalation. Containing the mess is not easy, new move announced by Poland today: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-66139757 'Ahead of this week's Nato summit in Lithuania, the Polish government has been warning that Wagner forces could be used to spark more trouble, so it's deploying hundreds of extra officers at its eastern border as reinforcements...Even if Wagner do eventually arrive in Belarus, Poland's worries and warnings may be motivated as much by domestic politics as security fears. "They are nothing the border guard can't deal with, no match for what we have," argues Piotr Lukasiewicz, of the Polish political analysis group Polityka Insight. "But as a political tool it can be quite useful to sell [Wagner] as a great danger," he adds. "We'll see how it develops," he says, but he thinks the government is "crying wolf" to boost its own security credentials ahead of elections this autumn.'

Yeah, I don't believe/agree with the escalation card. Russia escalates regardless. Eg moving tactical nukes into Belarus, genocide in Bucha, deportation 100,000s of children. Even without holding an opinion like mine, moderate analysts have said we could and should have given air assistance sooner. I agree that governments will use it for their own ends. I think that has little to do with containing the conflict.

The 'special military operation' continues to reach new lows. on 10:53 - Jul 31 with 5724 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | I’ve seen today the bizarre claims by Lukashenko that Wagner are building up their forces on the Polish border, and are eager to attack. Does anybody understand the context here, is this just posturing. If Wagner thought Ukraine was a suicide mission why would they want to engage the powerful Polish military, and potentially the whole of NATO. Seems that would end very badly for them?
