He was Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union (DExEU) in 2018. The work I was doing at the time involved his people. He was and is utterly useless. A total waste of space. He fully deserves to be thrown out when the time comes.

There's a little box on the page which says "NthQldITFC press here". Or "I'll try later". It's in red too which is useful as if they'd used white with white text it wouldn't stand out at all!

Bit harsh. He did identify that the route between Dover and Calais provided the main trading route between the UK and practically everywhere else. That's probably worth some accolade, maybe a knighthood or something.

No paywall on Independent but BBC reporting it now - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61245040 In any normal business, this is instant dismissal. [Post edited 27 Apr 2022 13:16]

Hoping this is a sign of how the local elections will go. on 13:20 - Apr 27 with 1061 views | tractordownsouth | It's good to see people leaving the Conservative Party but it's a shame that one of his points of contention in the issue is that he doesn't think the local council is NIMBY enough, especially because the South East has some of the least affordable houses in the country. But on a more positive note, yes Dominic Raab is completely screwed next time.

There are a few councils where Tories are branding themselves as "Local Conservatives" on the actual ballot paper to try and distance themselves from Boris and his cabal.

Oh yeah. I saw the word 'Register' and just automatically thought, "you're not having my money" - but I'm too young and too dumb to register for free anyway. Edit: Johnson will have to have a couple of large whiskies and a re-organisation of his cabinet now. Five fingers and a shuffle. [Post edited 27 Apr 2022 13:30]

It's free/open as most papers are on the internet I think the register thing is if you want to post a comment - and some articles (v few) are only available to registered readers

I've got a real problem with how to think of the Tories as a whole. I'm a firm believer that recent extreme political language and discourse is helpful to nobody, yet also feel that the only word to describe this party and what they stand for is 'scummy'. Pretty hard to reconcile.

I can fully understand the wish to protect green land and its wildlife. There has long been an argument that there are enough brown sites to be getting on with before needing to cull more nature in order to build more homes. I won't pretend to know why this isn't more widely implemented but can only assume some owners prefer to sit on those sites for long-term investments rather than let them go for housing?

I think it's fair to say it was only news to him, yes. Luckily he wasn't in a position of much importance. Imagine someone that stupid being in charge of things, like helping to run a country. That could be disastrous.

One of the problems is brown sites are not where people want to live - work/retirement etc 170 years ago houses were built in the then emerging mill towns for the workers - the houses are still there, but the work is not. So as to ease the pressure n the 'South' works needs to be displaced around the country, where possible. Which means longer term planning rather than a daily knee jerks to problems the government has caused. An answer*would be to stop pouring money into the bottomless pit that is the already obsolete HS2. Instead , encourage more people to work away from urban areas in the South, Billions are being wasted that could be used to upgrade the IK's internet, and allow for distant working.. Much of Eat Anglia is food producing, but not labour producing 0 so is reliant upon non UK labour (now canned) Folk can own as many cars as they wish, as they can houses. However, the former is not a problem (environment aside), but the latter has restrictions on the number built - utterly absurd. The days of retirees vacating houses and retiring abroad are now over. As long as we have a government fixated on short term populist measures to retain power, this backward thinking will continue to hold back the country *an answer, one among many

I'd say that 'scummy' was a fairly handy shorthand to decsribe a group that is institutionally bigoted, corrupt, incompetent and criminally inclined, myself. You'd have be as keen on criminals, bigots, incompetents and corruption as DaveU to downvote that. [Post edited 27 Apr 2022 18:08]

Blimey. And also blimey to this: “Asked whether watching pornography at work was a sackable offence, the spokesperson [for Johnson] said: “I am not aware of the disciplinary action. Obviously, it is wholly unacceptable behaviour and it is being looked into.” It’s a straight red card to anyone caught doing that at our place. Nobody would be “unaware” of our rules around stuff like this.
