What a strange country we are that the local elections are becoming Partygate vs. Beergate and anything else that makes up the Westminster political/media bubble.

Local government on its own terms should be the focus. The only connection made to Westminster should be how local resources and services have been starved of funds over decades.

Yeah, cos Starmer is as bad in your book as Johnson. Which is as short-sighted a view as I've ever seen on this forum in 23+ years.

He must read the Daily Mail as he is trotting out the tired “all politicians are the same “ that you see in the comments there.

The difference is you don’t care if Starmer lies because it’s only to Labour members and over progressive policies.

But that type of dishonest, opportunistic politicking is the same as Johnson’s.

Nope. Just wrong.

The two are not remotely comparable.

Why?

1 or 2 I could understand. But breaking all 10 leadership pledges sounds much more like the pathological dishonesty of Boris. Starmer also can’t keep a straight line on much else.

I get it. Like the Brexiteers and Tories who don’t care about Johnson’s different lies, you don’t care if it gets the results you want.

Frankly, that’s the state of our politics in a nutshell – and the country as a result.

Come on then- give us your best 3 alleged "breaches" of integrity and then compare them to pro-roguing parliament unlawfully (and underkining the independent judiciary), outright lying about the NI border issue re Brexit, and misleading parliament about parties.

Incidentally, I have never voted labour in my life.

You are the one claiming breaches and claiming they are equivalent. I have no idea what it is you are referring to.

Your answer speaks volumes. Its all about ideology for you, not facts. Its like those people who were too wed to Roy Keane to accept he was bad.

You have no idea what I am referring to ... I think we’re getting to the heart of the problem.

Fill your boots. This isn’t even an exhaustive list on each broken pledge. Nor on his shakiness re: even the timid policies he’s triangulating around now.

Best 3. Compare to the Johnson ones I picked. You are putting the argument that Starmer is no better than Johnson. It is not for the rest of us to try to pull the substance of that from twitter threads you link.

Like Luke Akehurst and Trevor Phillips among many others?

Quite agree but they’re embedded I’m afraid.

What has Luke Akenhurst done to deserve being labeled a crank and a racist?

Taking aside the whataboutery, I'd be very surprised to find that he has endorsed the statement that...

“the Germans were completely justified in persecuting and expelling the Jews (which is all that was actually happening), just as we would be today. Hitler and the National Socialists freed Germany from the death grip of the Jews and gave it back to the German people.”

That "Anne Frank was a “bisexual degenerate” and that her diary is an, “obvious fraud laced with pornographic and sexually subversive passages”.

And that “the Jews have used their Holocaust hoax as a sinister tool to successfully promote perversity in movies, literature and Academia.”

Unbelievable.

I’ve already said that the difference with Johnson is that he is brazen about it. And his lies are further highlighted by the media.

Why do you refuse to address 10 (ten) broken pledges just because they didn’t get onto your or many people’s radar? This is someone who is as undemocratic and lacking in integrity and honesty as Johnson.

But he seems to be “your” liar so that’s all OK.

Philips is the racist as you probably accept by leaving him out.

I have no proof of Akehurst’s racism however much I suspect some kind of right-wing islamophobic supremacy given his overall approach to domestic and foreign politics.

But the guy is 100% crank who wants Labour to be an establishment party. An absolute cancer in a party that is supposedly meant to offer opposition and a real alternative for the people of the UK.

So what’s the solution? Labour could try and return to a Corbynist approach with someone who perhaps isn’t so decisive at the top of the tree but that probably won’t happen until the next general election defeat. In the meantime, politics in England is in such a position where one of two parties will lead the government; Scotland is similar just with different parties.

As a collective, TWTD is one of the most progressive forums on the Internet but we’re also an echo chamber - what is posted and supported on here is not necessarily viewed in the same way by wider society. Most of the country sees the future as a simple choice of Conservative v Labour. Numbers are not in our favour to sway it another way; not at the moment. In the drastic divide that politics currently sits which party is better? Then it may be a case of hold your nose and understand the next election might be about getting Johnson’s rabble out more than their replacement.

Not silencing the left of the party maybe?

Why should I vote for a party that doesn't represent my interests and has no intention of doing so?

At this point in time people will only vote Labour because they're not the Tories. That's what Koonters has been getting pelters for pointing out.

Where are the progressive policies that the demands of this generation demands?

Sure, anything but the Tories is great. But we need more. Much more. And shutting out actual leftists from the conversation opens them up to the accusation of not being that far removed from the Tories.

I have no solution per se. That’s for a genuine democratic discussion.

Other than for people to stop seeing the current politics and political discourse as any way forward. Like it’s been no way forward for decades.

We need to grow up as a democracy. And stop encouraging this crap.

Giving power to the current Labour Party with its lack of solutions or indeed concern for the underlying issues facing the UK and the world will make things worse. At a time when the current Conservatives are scraping the barrel and much better choices – offering real progress – can be made.

Well said.

We’ve been criminally letting down the younger generations (amongst many other marginalised groups depending on ethnicity, disability, social class and geography) in the UK. And what do we say to them? Here’s more of the same.

Because we’re either too clueless or self-interested to do anything else.

Starmer actually looks and sounds like a Prime Minister in waiting and his front bench is a vast improvement over that under Corbyn or the shower under Johnson.

The cranks and racists still need routing out though.

You'd be hard pushed to find any major political party that doesn't have some cranks and racists, probably true with minor ones too.
