Strange Noises At Home. 17:34 - Jun 14 with 1380 viewsStochesStotasBlewe

Got back from my day toiling, am a bit weary and heard a rustling noise in the living room. Further investigation and a sparrow was banging against the wood burning stove glass.
Opened the door and one startled bird immediately flew upstairs. Have managed to catch and release it unharmed to return to the large resident flock that live in my hedge.
How the heck did it get down the chimney?
Anyone else encountered this?

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

When we had a house with a chimney we'd had this happen on a few occasions

"a sparrow was banging against the wood" is that some kind of euphemism?

Unfortunately not, though I might consider using it in polite company in future.

Aha, not some sinister “Stranger Things “ scenario then.

At least it’s reminded me to get the chimney swept (not a euphemism).

We have cowls on top of the chimney pots which prevents birds getting in. Our neighbours both sides do not and have jackdaws nesting in their chimneys. We get sparrows nesting under the roof tiles. They get in the tiniest of gaps and it's almost impossible to stop them without re-roofing our old cottage. I guess that's why they are called house sparrows!

Talking of strange: My nan used to get a regular colony of bees get in the attic. One year it was so bad you had nectar/honey dripping down her smokestack... also not a euphomism

A big fat bloke manages it every Christmas so it must be easy for a bird.

...and he does it with a full sack, whereas the sparrow may have had an empty one, depending upon whether he'd finished banging against the glass or not.

One would assume he didn't start banging against the glass until down the chimney, so actually would have had a full sack too.

Had this quite often in my previous house. Best approach to getting them safely out of the house is prior to releasing them is to make sure all doors and curtains are closed bar those in front of an open window. Once released the bird will normally head straight for the daylight, through the open window. Has always worked for me.

Yep, same thing last year had about 6 or 7 . The top metal guard on the chimney has blown off in a storm. Now replaced and no problems since.

We have a chimney guard.
Reckon the sparrow was pissed, toppled in and woke up with a hangover in my wood burner.

Mostly Starlings, usually young ones who haven't worked out that chimneys are better for sitting on than flying around in.
