Disparity? Got to be thinking Colchester is up there as the worst; 121,000 population, average crowd of 2,781.

Luton also, 218k population, 9k average (obvs that will improve with new ground)

62 - 78 - 81

I would often go to Layer rd when Town weren’t playing in the early to mid 80s . The atmosphere was non existent and crowds were generally no bigger than 2500.

It was certainly a very different experience from watching Town. I watched those two, and Essex cricket, ...and they were like three different sports.

The last two seasons at Layer Road were in the Championship, so the ground was very often full ( which was about 5,500) and of course many away fans coudn't get a ticket. (In the last game at Layer Road, Stoke got promoted to the Premier League.)
But gates at the new ground were quite often bigger than that pre-Covid, five or six times a season, I'd say - partly because of away fans (with Leeds i League 1 for example) , some local-ish visitors (Cambridge, Orient, Southend)
Last season gates were specially low, partly because buying tickets was so complicated, and partly because it was such a drab set of fixtures . (No derbies, very few 'fallen giants'. )
Some Colchester fans like to pretend that Layer Road was this rocking hot-bed, ...and it had its moments . But I remember the 80s and coming out of the garrison onto Layer Raod and my heart sinking when I could see just from spaces between the scattered Lowry-esque figures trudging to the ground that the attendance would be about 1600. ( I could estimate it within about thirty people.) I used to feel sorry for the players, like when you go to a concert and there's not enough people at it and the band have to put on a brave face.

Stoke got promoted by winning at home (against Leicester I think).

They certainly played Col U in the last game at Layer Rd, but I can't remember if it was the last or last-but-one game of the season, so Stoke were either already up or not quite when they played that game.

You’re talking about the city of Norwich and the whole borough of Ipswich which I guess includes martlesham, kesgrave etc etc????

As a town to town basis***** Norwich is a lot bigger than Ipswich in size and population, I hate to admit it but it’s fact. Ipswich though is probably more dense.

As for the OP - if Dudley were in the football league it would be them - where are they in football status?

******Lucan top tip. If you want to annoy a Nodger - say you’re popping into town, equally, ask the taxi driver to take you into town.

They absolutely hate it and always immediately respond with “City”

I've been to Norwich. They're definitely more dense.

I stand corrected. They certainly had a lot of interest in the game.

I remember being impressed with the ovation they gave Teddy Sheringham when he was substituted.

They've been dropping badly for a few years, including before covid. They averaged 5,466 in their last season at Layer Road. In 14 season since moving (excluding 2021 for obvious reasons) they've only had a higher average attendance in 2 seasons out of 14, and those were just after they moved. Since then it's dropped more than 30%, although they have gone from a top half finish in the Championship to fighting for survival in League 2 in that time.

For the last 11 seasons with fans, the average has actually been lower than the minimum they got in their last season at Layer Road. Seems they now regularly get crowds below 3,000 which must feel so empty in their new ground.

Kesgrave, Rushmere, pinewood and Martlesham all full outside the Borough.

Greater Ipswich if you like has a population of around 180k.

I've just googled it

Ipswich is listed as 147k and Nodge is 199k

TBF that 180k figure Is the Ipswich Built Up area which includes Woodbridge so your figure is more accurate.

When I was younger the fact that Nodge had a bigger population really bothered me - but now I don't care as it doesn't matter - they will never be us!

Living in Ipswich though and staying in Norwich half the week means I can get a grip of both places - I regret to say that Norwich is on a different scale, it's a superb place - and it dwarfs Ipswich.

Funge came up to see me in Norwich for a few pints last week and before he completely collapsed he did mention how great Norwich was.

I read your figures a bit more positively. It's 'only' last season that was truly horrible. In the three years pre-Covid, gates had been slightly on the increase, and before that the drop was consistent with relegation followed by no instant reaction on the pitch.

But clearly what happens next is going to be 'interesting'. I doubt the council will get round to running any special buses, but less obstructive ticketing arrangements-- plus the return of b/w stripes! -- may help.

Meanwhile, the away support will continue to be strong, I'm confident of that. Today's fixture list has been well received too.

Take your pick of any poorly attended London club in terms of population in catchment, but I suppose that’s not what you’re after.

But I guess that's the problem with this question and London clubs, at the last census Charlton had a population of just over 14,000 so their attendance percentage is excellent. However the slightly wider community has a lot higher population which lives probably nearer the ground than a lot of people in Ipswich live near Portman Road.

I'm happy for Ippy to stay smallish, the bigger it gets the more of the Suffolk countryside it will swallow up.

Unless they stick everyone in tower blocks of course, but I dont think I'd like that either.

I'm a town person - I love concrete and hate the countryside.

When I was 11 my family moved from Hounslow to a tiny place called Mellis (Near Eye)

I am convinced that if they hadn't have done that I would now be completely normal. Can you imagine the change of life at that difficult age?

One minute I'm playing football in the road, the next minute I'm being advised to climb trees with inbred people.

Apparently in the 60's or 70's there were plans to build and join Ipswich with Felixtowe, that would have been brilliant - a proper east coast major City.

Daniel Defoe, visiting Ipswich in the early 1700s, proclaimed it a fine place with good air and the finest of situations. But another travel writer of a later time said that it was as if the citizenry of Ipswich had signed a pact across the centuries to eradicate every good thing that the past had bequeathed. I think that this difference is what Lucan and Funge could see on their jolly in Norwich.

Ransomes and others attracted the thousands to bring us towards the size we are today, but the homes that sprang up to accommodate those moving in from the countryside to work there, in particular the old area where Suffolk College now stands, quickly became a byword for squalour and meanness. It was actually the country invading the town which seemed to have done for us.

Yes, I heard of that plan, Orwell City was its tentative name for planning purposes, was to be centred on Levington.
