He'll be on good money . A footballers career is short. In terms of wages he hasn't earned enough yet to be 'comfortable '. Lastly ..he isn't as good as many think. Not for top level football anyway. |  | | |

That was before the Premier League era, when the disparity in terms of finance and quality was nothing like it is now. Also, he was an England international in a second tier side. Scottish football's standing in the game was also quite different, having qualified for the World Cup several times in a row. Chris Woods went at the same time - rather than stay at Norwich and play in the English top flight. That would never happen now.
So yeah I agree it wasn't a bad move for Butcher, but it was over 30 years ago and a different world. |  | | |
