What is the latest on the chap from Leeds? Are they still waiting to get another LB in?

I thought Penney was fine today. He was solid defensively, and attacking-wise was arguably more effective than Burns. Having said that, he probably wouldn't have played if Leigh had been in the squad.

Sounds like Leigh and Ball will be back in training on Monday, so good chance he doesn't play next week (or possibly ever again).

That said, for the remainder of his time here people should get off his back. It never helps anything, he's not that bad and he's doing his best.

I reckon the criticism of Penney is harsh. Maybe it comes from a comparison with Burns on the other flank last year. But today he did more than Burns managed, got in a couple of good attacking positions and created a chance with a decent cross.

Not to say we can’t do better, just I think it’s a bit unfair.

That’s going to really help his confidence if he reads this. Well done.

Terrible is a bit OTT, though I wouldn't disagree that we need better.

Good cross second half which Morsy should have done better with.

He was no better or worse than anyone else in the first half. I thought we looked marginally more threatening down his left side in both halves.

I don’t understand the over the top treatment of Penney.

Do I think he is a first choice LWB? Not personally
Do I think he a suitable understudy? Absolutely

There’s one every season that gets it from the off, seems Penny is that guy

He definitely has. I saw him on here a little while back and he doesn’t look happy now.

Anyone else think that Burns is playing at about 70% this pre-season. Seems to be managing himself so that he can go full throttle for Bolton (I hope)

Doesn't seem to have the same drive and finishing as last season, which may be why we look 'disjointed' going forward on occasion. Will be interesting to see how KVY does on Tuesday night, with probably 90 mins under his belt, or even Edwards for that matter. Burns should start against Bolton, but he's definitely not undroppable at this very moment compared to last season.

Maybe not being the 'main man' going forward will see him struggle to reach his G/A record next season. Not against him taking a proverbial 'back seat' next season compared to the others in our team. If Harness, Chaplin, Ladapo, TJJ etc. can take the load of, it will leave him with more space to exploit because the opposition won't see him as the 'main threat' like he was last season.

All the more reason to sort our left side out, imo... I'd say Burns is holding back a bit. He had a slightly later start to pre season, after his Wales stint. But he will obviously be ear marked as a threat by opposition after last season. So he may not get the same space and freedom. Especially when teams sit back and let us play sideways . Think ,perhaps, too . The playing relationship with the likes of Ladapo and Harness, or any newbies will take a few games to hone .He'll be alright for Bolton's visit. I'm sure.

I'd be happy going into the season with Penney and Leigh, if we can upgrade that's fine but I'd rather 1 more striker and an AMF

Generalisation from me because I didn't see the game, but it often seems the case there's confirmation bias at work from some of our fan base.

Decide a player isn't all that, focus on any mishap that player may be involved in and opinion confirmed.

I'm sure we all do it from time to time unconsciously but nonetheless.

I'd say the opposite. We've got lots of good options for both those forward positions, at least 7 you'd be happy enough to see making 20+ appearances, plus 3 promising youngsters to try. Left wing back we've only got 2, seemingly no youth players on the verge of the first team and one of them we're clearly not that happy with.

It's also a really key position in how we play.

I’m really bored reading OPs like this. It’s a lazy social media age comment. It’s one opinion, meaningless without any further comments or data to support.

If you are an Ipswich supporter and you know L1, it’s obvious we will need a squad. The season is relentless. Why create negativity around single players, it’s a team game. Whether Penny is first choice, back up or moved out remains to be seen. He hasn’t downed tools, he hasn’t asked for a transfer, he hasn’t brought the club into disrepute, he’s an Ipswich player therefore gets my support.

I have never seen KVY play well at this level at LWB, that no slant on him, I’m sure he’s only covered a few times. He’s a RWB, has form about 3-5 years ago apparently playing for ColU as LWB. I will reserve comment until I’ve seen him play 3 games in a row let alone play LWB! If we need a new LWB, with our cash and aspirations of promotion, I would expect KMcK to get a specialist rather than shoehorn players into positions.

Obviously based on the fact he's still at the club and selected for games McK disagrees with you.

Getting on players backs has been a trait since football became a spectator sport. Probably the same at all clubs. Even back in our glory days, players like Mickey Mills got dogsh!t abuse from certain quarters.

Yeah, if he was as far off the level as some often intimate, he wouldn't be part of our pre-season prep full stop.

Not in disagreement with you but as you said he had been playing regularly as a LWB when we signed him and it was reported we paid £500 k .Think I have that right ? Was that before we where relegated?

For me, you're better off having a right footed left back who actually progresses the ball forward than a left footed one who's constantly looking backwards, but I get the impression McKenna not a big fan on the "inverted full back".

I have a feeling that the EADT stated a few months that McK didn't like the "inverted full back".
