Energy costs with EON 14:44 - Aug 11 with 5144 viewsBrentwoodBlagger2

We have just been notified that our new monthly direct debit for gas and electric will rise from £300 per month to £1100 per month. We have a relatively large detached house, but we are economic with energy use and have a log burner. With usual monthly outgoings, I cannot see how they expect people to cope with this. Difficult times are ahead and energy bosses have rejected the approach today from the government for consumer help.

Hmmm.

'Those with a domestic electricity meter point paying for their energy via standard credit, payment card and direct debit will receive an automatic deduction to their bills over the 6 month period — totalling £400.'

I read that as they'll take it off your current DD?

No idea. I pay quarterly and not by DD.

Truly impaired.

Call me cynical but we all know what will happen. These greedy Energy companies will bake it into their pricing over a 6 month period and make it look like we're getting a 'discount'. In other words, the energy firms are being given £400 per household by the government, which will ultimately need to be funded by tax payers.

I say the government should hit them with a massive windfall tax and distribute it back to the public in cash.

I’ve assumed DD will stay the same but they’ll make, for example. a £100 bill £34?

Think the idea was to reduce debt not decrease DD

I don't understand how th average is likely to be £570 a month. Is that just Gas or Gas + Electric. Even if it's both, it feels remarkaby high as an average fuel cost.

I would be really interested to see what people are paying now by way of a £ per KWH and their average monthly usage. I've been averaging 220 KWH of Gas per month (at 7.4p / KWH), and 180 of Electric (at 29.3p / KWH). Then there's a fixed element which is about £10 on each. So my total bill is circa £90 a month. There's 2 adults, a toddler and a baby in my househould, which is probably above average in footprint. Is my house just ridiculously efficient or maybe it's an error and I'm going to be whacked with a big bill. I'm on the EDF standard variable rate so it's not like my £ per unit is based on old fixed rates or anything.

EDIT: This is an average since April, so obviously heating hasn't been on and that will of course increase usage over winter.

Im on a fixed rate until 31 Dec with Scottish Power.
My gas rate is 2.627 pence per kWh. Cost last quarter was £25.48. The Standing charge was £31.52.
Leccy is 19.194 pence per day per kWh during the day and 7.914 at night. Cost last quarter was £198 for the two. Standing Charge was £31.82.
I pay £241 PM and am about £640 in credit.

The fact Truss is still saying she’ll reduce VAT or green levies as her ‘help’

That’s about £18 a month on an average bill

You've done very well to fix those prices. Your standing charges are broadly the same as mine at £10 a month, but the variable ones are way lower.

You must use a fair amount of electric to spend £66 a month at those prices. Even if they're all daytime usage thats about 350kwh which is twice what I use. Maybe I just don't use much electric, but that would surprise me given my wife normally leaves every p1ssing light on.

The sad thing is this type of madness will cost lives, whatever happened to the unity we forged in the face of the pandemic, our leaders are leaving us to an uncertain fate, they care not one bit how it turns out.

I think they just don't comprehend the size of the issue and can't see past it being a fiscal matter rather than one of poverty and survival

On a related note, now that energy costs are starting touch rental/mortgage costs for some, I wonder what gives at the other end? Something has to get seriously cheaper if this carries on for long - wages and/or house prices are all I can think of.

Errrr no swimming pool. The smart meter shows that we have been using about £4 - £5 of energy per day for the last 3 months and I work from home. Only 2 of us live here. we have nothing that could be considered 'high usage'.

What is your actual usage in kWh and/or your current tariff?

I'm baffled as to why British Gas have reduced mine and my partners bill each month? We went from £57 a month, to £160 a month (from March) and they emailed the other day saying from next month it will be £140 a month.

Lulling us in to a false sense of security before we get stung in October maybe?
[Post edited 11 Aug 2022 15:01]

Variable DDs go up and down as your usage (and cost) changes. You’ll be using less now than in Feb when the March figure was calculated (assuming you’ve had central heating & hot water, and probably even accounting for the price hike*). And yes, lull before the storm. The autumn and winter are going to be horrific.

*edit- you could also have been running up a credit.
