So sloppy!

To clarify this post, I think they defended pretty well for the most part, but seemed determined to give the ball away!

Both pivotal players last year and dropping either could be a confidence damaging mistake.

Keogh is mid-30s and has come in as cover and to offer words of experience you'd assume and not to knock anyone off their perch.

Edmundson was great until his injury absence and may need games to get back to his best form. Wolf as I say was decent last season and I would be concerned by breaking up the partnership at the back at this stage.

Thinking how someone else was demanding Burgess should be playing instead of Edmundson and now this talk of Keogh...

Surely all our talk of building from the back means getting this core three back to their best and only introducing others when absolutely necessary?

Ideally, yes. Settled defences get you promoted. On the other hand, to work best any system needs players comfortable playing it, especially one as high-risk as playing out from the back. Woolfenden is very suited to it, occasional lapses in concentration aside. Edmundson doesn't look comfortable at all. He looks about as comfortable as christophe berra playing on the left of mccarthy's back three and getting murdered for pace every week.

Throw in those weirdos (me) who think Leigh might make a better LCB and we're in real trouble. Good job I'm not a manager, haha.

Tbh, I feel there’s always a mistake in either of them in every game. Both will sell a short pass, or get caught in possession, whilst Woolfie will make silly challenges when there’s no need too. I can see Keogh coming in. But as I said before, at whose expense?

I have a horrible feeling Fridge is off. By informed accounts he had an off night tonight but he’s very good generally, probably too good for this level.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

There was several big mistakes that we got away with last night and not only the centre backs , Leigh in the first couple of minutes and Harness later on, we were so lucky to get away with a clean sheet but you need a bit of luck , Walton superb .

Agree with this.

Players are not going to play well all of the time, especially if they’ve been out for a long spell with injury. We are only a few games into the season but the reality is two goals conceded in four matches. Add in a good defensive record second half of last season and I’d leave well alone.

Teams that get promoted start with a good defence, by and large. For this level, ours looks to be just that. We have good cover too for when injuries and suspensions kick in.

I’m more concerned about whether we have the firepower at the other end to kill teams. Again, ten points from four games says we are ok, but id love to see a good goal scorer up front.

Overall, we have what looks to be a settled, happy squad. We will only improve as the season progresses.

I agree and disagree with you!

Agreed - the ideal has to be that Woolf and Fridge play well enough to stay together as a unit. However, if one of them does start to struggle, of if as a pair they both dip a bit and need some help then I see Keith coming in to steady the ship and bring confidence back up. Sometimes an old head in the middle (Mowbray, Wark, etc) can help those around become better. If (big of) Woolf of Fridge drop out for a bit it won’t damage them because Kelly hasn’t come in to replace them, simply to help them along. I wouldn’t be surprised if that sometimes means him playing a handful of games alongside one of the other of them.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

Wolf benefits from the fact he can't play on the left at all so Edmundson has to do it.

I'm not convinced Wolf passing is as good as many on here make out. The ones straight into the stands seem to get quietly forgotten in favour of the one that comes off. I think he gets more leeway as he's an academy product.

Really think Edmundson is getting a rough ride here, nobody else we have or can afford is going to come in and be better on the ball than Edmundson, I don't believe Keogh will be but maybe we will see.

And I agree with this. The fact is that last night, especially in the first half, was the first time we as a team have been under the cosh as much as that since McK took over. They harried us, and we couldn't get a grip, so it is not surprising we made mistakes. I don't think the rain helped but it was significant that they prevented us from playing out from the back in the first half, and from recollection Donacien only received one or two passes. But we overcame things in the second half, and performances such as this will be character building.

The back three have been immense since McK took over, so I wouldn't be making any changes unless forced. Keogh is after all 36 so not sure he would have coped any better with the whirlwind we faced in the first half.

EDIT: The fact that Burgess was on the bench last night suggests Keogh is currently below him in the pecking order, although this may be due to fitness.
