… we just didn’t fire up in the first half… Morsy was quiet and we were trying to play the ball to Jackson’s feet to hold up the ball?! WTF
JJ was also struggling.
Thank goodness MOTM Burgess and an imperious Walton were never going to let them in… indeed I’m not sure they were ever going to really threaten
Then second half… which started with some truly woeful refereeing (which actually fired up our fans - FINALLY!)… Morsy went up a gear, Harness continued to be brilliant and Ladapo and Chaplin changed the game…
Lacklustre performance first half
But who cares!!???? We won at Accy! WE WON AT ACCY!!
Different team now… we’d have lost or drawn that last year
Quality of the bench
But one final point - McKenna won’t stick around if we’re playing in those terrible grounds, with lottery refs, and route one teams… but i feel he wants to be the one to get us out of this low level… a level we should be at… but we have to FIGHT to get out of it

I think it might've been some of the other stuff that got you 23 downarrows in the OP.

Lacklustre first half
It wasn't...
“ I thought the start of the game wasn’t easy, tactically it was a little bit different than we were expecting and it took us maybe 15 or 20 minutes to get our in-possession game going and find the spare man.
“I thought we grew into it before the end of the first half when we started to connect through the pitch”

Yeah course not
You have no idea what 'we' were expecting, unless by 'we' you mean yourself.
We had half hour of being heavily marked and harried and on the 30 minutes we visibly up-stepped our game.
The passing and movement was far pacier and the intent was more urgent.
It was clear it wasn't by accident that that was a point things took a different turn.
Prior to that we were still probing and testing their defences and capabilities all over the pitch, gauging what was what and apart from a couple of half-baked efforts never looked in real danger.

But that doesn't equate to being a lacklustre first half imo. I think your description is a bit harsh on town.
It’s the type of game in the mix that we have to work with in L1.
Yes ref was frustrating (this is not news to us) but it was the type of game we’ve come to expect - highly competitive, hard to break them down, pressure moments in our box.
Yes their game plan helped to stop us, credit them early on in first half.
Im pleased we are developing a range of tools to withstand these teams and now find ways to win them, that is a promotion challenge in its infancy right there.
I don’t really want to go on about refs each week, it can become a distraction from us doing what we need to do to win games, they suck the enjoyment out of winning too!

I don't know what you're reading there, or hearing from Stu and Andy, but it isn't "Lacklustre". When the opposition is playing tactically different to what you expected, that doesn't mean you're being "Lacklustre".

Think you’ve posted in an OTT way, but some of the points you make aren’t to wayward of the mark.
First half lacked quality and control from both sides, and I do think Jackson struggled today.
Game changed on the substitutions - we stepped up a gear from that moment, and kept our foot on the throat until the very end.
Games like that against teams like that will never be pretty, we are at our best with sides who try to go toe to toe playing expansive football.
Regarding ref, some questionable little decisions, but I’ve seen far far worse at this level.
I thought it was quite fortunate he didn't have a big decision to make because he was totally woeful and would likely have made the wrong one. Although that is par for the course these days.

I agree with you, it was a real slog of a game and the first half was a non-event apart from the poor refereeing. We stepped up the tempo in the second half but even then Accrington were proving tough to break down. The substitutions made the difference and Chaplin is absolutely priceless. The job was done and a good thing too because our next two away games could see us punished if we play below standard in them.

Thank God for you.
Yes McKenna, Stuart Watson et al rightly point out the first half was poor… ‘slog’ is a perfect summary.
“ I've seen better halves of football. Little spell of Town pressure around the half hour, but in general it's been a pretty scruffy affair.”
And Watson’s ‘scruffy affair’ also bang on.
I worried at 70mins that we were going to get a 0-0. We just weren’t putting enough energy and intent into the forward play, and Accrington were just a not being broken down.
But Chaplin and Ladapo gave us a zip and an impetus and the game lifted. It’s had been pretty horrid fare up till then, and the ref just made it more frustrating.
But as I state it’s a remarkably important win… we just weren’t doing it last season. I feel much more confident of automatic given the last 20mins display.
I thought our back line were very good, Accrington were really kept at bay and I feel Wolfenden is getting back to his best. And kudos to an imperious Burgess. Leif also impressed and is improving.

It was a “scruffy affair” because there was another side in the game for most of it. But we slowly neutralised them and then finished them off.
It’s not all about us.

Completely agree
Not sure I mentioned it Darth, but I was speaking to the dad of their number 6 Liam Coyle, DM, in the pub beforehand, nice guy (his son came out of Liverpool yoof system due to back injury, and is trying to kick start career on a pittance at Accrington, rather than go to US).
Instruction from manager was to man mark across pitch with his lad on Morsy.
McKenna sort of confirmed this in his post match comments, with them latching on to us and with only Wolfie left free… which we only managed to exploit fleetingly in the first half.
So yes as you say two teams on the pitch.
But as Watson and his sidekick confirm… Accrington are not carrying the kind of aerial and physical threat up front as last season with strikers departing

"Awful goals"??
No goal for us is ever "awful", esp in the league.
I remember McKenna saying he wanted to see us score more ‘crappy’ (may not have been his exact word) last season. We didn’t do enough of it. When Harness scored that goal from the keeper spilling it against mk dons, he also said that was his favourite goal
It’s all well and good scoring great team goals, but scrappy goals win you games and are a result of being gritty and on it

You're desperate to twist what McKenna, Watson and Warren have said to fit your view, but it really doesn't. For example, the game being a hard slog and scruffy - again - don't mean that our performance was lacklustre.
