Just wanting to check if the mother in law is being conned.

2 x fence posts. With supports plus 1 gate. Nothing fancy just a wooden gate.

Quoted £960 + vat...

Seems a bit steep. But also appreciate we've no idea of the costs of these things and the labour for.it.

It's based in Sussex.

Must admit personally I felt that's crazy. But then with everything going up. It's hard to know what actually is the cost of things nowadays.

Well, prices of materials have gone up and so have labour costs but, how many quotes have you got in ?

People are busy and sometimes give a high price when they are as they're not too fussed if they don't get the job.

Fence posts will cost anything between £10 and £25 depending on thickness. Supports between £10 and £20 depending on thickness and a gate around £100 depending on size. Could be less if small. Labour no more than 2 hours and thats with a tea break. You do the sums.

Thats steep you best bet is to try and find the price of posts and gate similar to the ones online including delivery then you can tell what the price is to fit them

That's basically taking the piss.

2 x 2.1 m fence posts circa £40.00.

1 x basic gate 1.8m between £120-140.

2 x bags redimix concrete £15.00 max

2 x fence support £20.00 max.

Day labour £200.00 max.

Total £415.00 .

That should be the absolute maximum she should be paying imo.

The only thing I'd ask really is what the situation is on prep work.

If the posts are going straight into soil with little else needed than to bore the holes or if they are going to be situated on a rough hard surface area that needs to smashed up first and then repaired or a level hard surface that's good enough to take bolt-down supports.

There could be work there that's not apparent to us without seeing it.

Defeating that, I'd say between yours and Hype's pricing sounds right to me. A little over the £500 mark with the VAT maybe.

I certainly wouldn't touch the quote given in the OP, agreed.

I do know that fencing is one of those jobs that has been hijacked over the years by cowboys who charge a premium for sub-standard work so would only use a tradesman who comes locally recommended.

I recently had three fence posts taken out, then three concrete ones put in, then the gravel boards and new fence panels put back in. That was £150 for the labour (materials on top).

Minimum of two bags of Postcrete in each post hole with concrete posts, but especially when supporting a gate.

Frimmers mum is getting ripped off tho. I paid £1500 for 15 6ft panels, 16 concrete posts. 15 concrete gravel boards AND the old fence removing. And that was incl VAT.

I’m a fencer, shame your mother in law wasn’t local I would have done it for £900 for cash😅

In all seriousness that quote is ludicrous, there are some cowboys out there unfortunately

Wooden posts. One bag per post and using post supports.

You got a very good deal, by the way.

A decent gate is £200+.. plus the gate fixtures hinges lock etc.. probably be 1 man + labourer, + collecting materials and disposing of rubbish/spoil..cost of fuel to get to the job and running a generator any drill bits for drilling or breaking out concrete… £415 nowhere near covers it

Met-posts are not suitable for holding a gate, certainly not one 1.8m high.
My 1.5m gate is supported by 1 steel bolt in post support and the other post concreted into the ground. It's a fairly hefty gate and perfectly stable.
Met posts are not suitable for any substancial fencing either.
Hope that clears that up.

The op says basic gate, nothing fancy.
A basic gate is between £120-140 .
Even at my age, i could do it in a working day.

Perhaps that's why i'm skint.

Basic gate but you want good quality..£960 is a bit steep but anyone running a business proper, and doing a decent job, won’t be doing it for much less, can’t see how you could afford too..
