Controversial decisions 10:51 - Sep 14 with 2578 viewsGeoffSentence

Did Connor Chaplin dive for the sending off as Alfie Kilgour and Joey BArton are suggesting? Really hard to tell from the highlights.

And should we have have had a penalty for handball as the whole North Stand called for? That one is not on the highlights and was impossible to say from SBRL.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.
Poll: The best Williams to play for Town

I know we were baying for it last night by Guthrum 14 Sep 2022 10:44
Chaplin didn't have any real reason to dive at that point. He was pretty much through for a run on goal (with confidence in his scoring ability high). Diving would have stopped that promising attack* (which the foul did). Getting an opposition player sent off that late in the game when Town were already leading 2 - 0 lends no great advantage to us.

In any case, it looked to me like a straightforward accidental trip while Kilgour was maneuvering to stop Chaplin getting away.

* Yes, a free kick in an attacking position results, but the opposition have a chance to get players back, form a wall, etc.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I don't think so. Contact at pace. Any striker would have gone down.

Matt Holland thought a penalty would have been harsh for the handball due to the short distance of travel and speed of the ball. From memory his arm was away from his body, though.

If he was going to dive then he had the time to carry the ball into the box then go down for a pen, in real time just looked like a very dim and clumsy challenge.

Again in real time the handball looked pretty obvious - ball didn't travel very far between boot and hand but, without having looked back at it, it did seem like his arm was stretched well away from his body.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

No he didn't dive, he was defiantly caught.

Yes it was a penalty. The ball was travelling upwards and hit the arm which suggests the arm was in an un-natural position - ie not by the player's side.

Totally unbiased opinion of course.

No dive, felt confident about that at the time, but then the replay from a different angle didn't really show much or I missed it. Just watched the highlights again, if you slow the playback speed right down, it does look he turns his foot on Chaplin when he realises he's been done. Small amount of contact, but at high speed, enough.

No penalty, not enough time to react and his arms weren't that high anyway.

Thought the ref had a bit of a weird game, ott booking for Morsy but gave us a few cheap free kicks, almost felt like he thought he owed us one... or maybe he's just not that good.

Disagree on the Morsy booking, he was lucky to get away with something similar after a few mins so was def getting booked once he did the same thing a second time.

It seemed as if the BR players were aware of how Morsy likes to turn away with the ball, that is how he was caught twice quite quickly. Evans having such a great game allowed Morsy to take a step back and not be so aggressive in the tackle second half.

Agree Morsy made 2 identical fouls on their no.21 (who was very decent i thought) when he was breaking through towards the final 3rd. No complaints he was given a yellow for the second one.

Chaplin loves scoring goals. He's desperate to be TGS this season.

There is no way he would have gone down outside the box if he hadn't been clipped.

I'd personally say the stamp on Evans was the biggest error the ref made.

I know he has had plenty of practice, but Morsy knows how to play on a yellow.

He left him alone after that.

For the penalty yes his hand was well out from his body . VAR would have deemed it was a penalty .

It looked like he went down easy to me, I'd need to see a slow mo but IDC if he did, we've needed to be more streetwise for years.

Looked like it could have lead to a chance had he stayed up (and that it was easier to do so) but he won a FK, their ayer got a red so why complain

No he didn't as others have said he was running at pace and if you get even a slight clip it usually trips you up . Also he would have been one on one with the keeper much better than a free kick outside the box . Although i was not sure live i am now sure the defender knew exactly what he was doing and trying to make it look accidental but failed to convince the Ref who was close and got a good view

As Alan Shearer would confirm when you're running at speed it's easy to dive and make it look like a trip... Oh sorry I meant, when you're running at speed the slightest touch can send you flying.

In slo mo Chaplin got his legs tangled and tripped himself. Kilgour should not have been sent off and I would expect them too appeal that one.

I thought it was because the defenders arm/hand appeared to make contact in real time, not because of a trip.

With all the differing points of view, there's small wonder that refs have difficulty in seeing things right in real time.

Chaplin's accelerating so a slight touch would easily send him over. Not something that's easy to discern from any angle on the video, but... there's absolutely no reason for Chaplin to dive and he's looking at goal throughout the passage of play.
