That is a ve r y standard procedure for all Central Banks in times of crisis.

I think it's a touch different to buying up company bonds.

This is more like we as a country needed money so we borrowed it off others. We are now buying our own debt back and ummmm owe it to ourselves
And how do we buy debt without borrowing more to buy those gilts back?

They have created a financial crisis of massive proportions. It’s totally unacceptable. Starmer and the opposition need to pin them to the wall over this.

Starmer is trying to get them to recall parliament to do just that.

Of course the Tories will hide away, like they have for the last 2 days.

The man who helped write a book called "Britannia Unchained", going on his knees, cap in hand to a load of American financiers to ask them not to bet against the pound and willfully lose money to help him out.

The irony would be delicious if it wasn't so sad.

He's just got the vote of confidence from the board.

How long do we give it? 48 hours?

Time for a general election. And time to take leadership elections away from the members.

Agreed. It's all well and good arguing "well you don't elect a prime minister, you elect an MP" blah blah blah, but when changing the leader of the governing party can cause this level of craziness it really should trigger a general election.

“ A spokesman said: "The PM and the Chancellor are working on the supply side reforms needed to grow the economy which will be announced in the coming weeks".”

What a terrifying comment - haven’t they done enough damage. It’s like letting a drink driver who’s just crashed, back into his car to carry on driving.

Have heard that a significant amount of members have already binned off the party conference and a number of no confidence letters have been sent to Brady - as has been widely reported. Not that I think this changes much.

I don't really see a way out sadly and fear we're just stuck with another 2 years of misery unless people take to the streets poll tax style to force a GE.

I can’t see Truss and Kwasi lasting two years. The Tory MPs will start to panic at the thought of losing their seats. The benefits of this push for growth , even if by some miracle it started to work would not be visible for some time.

Hard to see them lasting 2 months at the moment.

This has been an utter disaster.

How could anyone in their wildest dreams think she would be a suitable Prime Minister?

I wouldn't employ her to run a shoe shop.

They were worried about viability of pension funds

The pension funds issue is a classic unintended consequences, with scheme valuation being based in part of gilt values and a lot of quarterly valuations due!!
