The name “Super Blues” on 09:52 - Oct 10 with 1751 views | itfcjoe | I find it strange that the club really seem to dislike 'The Tractor Boys' as a nickname, but I receive an official 'Uppa Towen' newsletter every week - both seem to be from the same side of leaning into our agricultural and local history I'm quite happy with Tractor Boys, it's uniquely ours, find Super Blues so generic and rubbish and wouldn't even associate it with ourselves. I agree with DK about 'Town' being more us than Super Blues, or Blues, so maybe something to build on there

Spent the past ten years abroad, about the only thing anyone younger then 35 know about Ipswich was the Tractor Boys tag if I had referred to Town as the superblues I would have been laughed out of the pub. Superblues is crass and can be applied to any team in blue. Tractorboys identifys Town instantly to a generation who know nothing about our history.

100%. Although I feel it's unlikely to be a deep hatred for Tractor Boys from the club, it was probably more of a 2 minute decision, mentioned to the commentator in passing 'hey, use Super Blues from now'. Could be as simple as 1 person not liking it, not thinking it gives us enough broad appeal etc. I'm with you, I prefer Tractor Boys as it's unique. If you ask 100 football fans who are known as the Super Blues I dare say none would say Ipswich. Whereas the majority would know we're the tractor boys. A nod to the agricultural past and uniquely ours. Don't see what's not to like about it.

The name “Super Blues” on 10:47 - Oct 10 with 1678 views | HighgateBlue | I don't have a problem with Tractor Boys. I think it doesn't pay to be defensive and reject something that is largely externally imposed, because then it can become a form of mockery. Embrace it, and it's just a bit of fun. Having said that, in the club's greatest ever period of success, the club nickname was Super Blues. I had a duvet cover and wallpaper with it on. Endorsed by the club, sung by the fanbase. Fine. I see no need to reject a legitimate (albeit bland) part of our heritage. Chopping and changing just sends us down an American route of different logos and nicknames every five minutes. Even cricket is susceptible to this. I follow Worcestershire CCC for reasons that are too dull to explain, but they were always known as the Pears. Then their one day team apparently needed a nickname so they were the Royals, and now they're the Rapids. And then with the Hundred there's a whole new batch of team names. The area is covered by Birmingham Phoenix. I wonder who the netminders on the roster will be in the final inning. (sic) Tractor Boys, fine. Super Blues, fine. Let's leave it there. Along with the name of the club, town, the badge, and the colour we play in. Let the revolution happen ON the pitch! In KMac we trust.

'Super Blues' just sounds really naff to me, as does just 'Blues'. As others have said 'Town' fits quite well and we can certainly become the biggest 'Town' club over the next few years and really own that name.

Not sure why Tractor Boys is so reviled by some as it was a nickname which literally came from the terraces rather than being a marketing man's idea imposed on the support or similar.

I like the Tractor Boys personally because it’s self-deprecating and inoffensive. But I imagine it takes value off Gamechanger’s investment. And doesn’t help attract players, sponsors etc. It does make us sound increasingly tinpot the further the Robson/FACup/UEFA cup years fade into the past for the rest of the footballing world.

"And doesn’t help attract players, sponsors etc." Big money in the tractor business. I'm not so sure nicknames have that sort of impact. Club has generally shied away from it though under various ownerships, think probably as they know there's a section of the support which don't particularly like it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not sure it makes much difference tbh, don't see why a generic nickname that offers nothing unique would add any value to the club. It's never going to 'cut through' as being an Ipswich nickname, however well we do. You could argue that having something that's easily identifiable as ours is stronger for the brand. We could publish an image of a Tractor alongside a football, with no words, and people would associate it with us. Juventus are known as the Old Lady and they've done OK.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s a major thing but it’s probably not “maximising our brand value” outwards. Especially if we move up the pyramid as intended. We’re a club that has been champions of England, FA Cup winners and winner of a significant European trophy. Yet we sound like we’re Swindon and just another gatecrasher who doesn’t belong at the top. Added to which most people don’t really know where the town of Ipswich is or what it’s like so I can see the straw-chewing farmers vibe reinforced. We know that’s all b@ll@cks but unfortunately it’s those external perceptions that really define the club’s value to those new fans, sponsors and players we want to attract.

The name “Super Blues” on 09:26 - Oct 10 by Darth_Koont | Like several have said, I don’t really mind. But ... I also prefer Town. It’s much, much more specific to us – and indeed we could easily overtake Luton and Huddersfield over the next few years to become the leading Town. Just like Man City are City. The campaign starts here. |
Agreed. When discussing weekend plans with colleagues up and down the country, I’ve never said I’m watching the blues/tractor boys, only Town.

The name “Super Blues” on 12:27 - Oct 10 with 1530 views | Kitman | I remember having a lively ‘debate’ in a pub with a female Everton fan over the Super Blues handle some years back. All good banter but thinking about it, there are just too many teams that play in blue and with our recent history in the Championship and L1 adding ‘super’ to the blues nickname just does not fit. Never been 100% onside with Tractorboys but I have at least learned to live with it..

The name “Super Blues” on 07:56 - Oct 10 by urbanblue | All good points. Moving forward we'll get more new fans abroad being referred to as the Super Blues. However much some fans may like it The Tractor Boys is just not cool. Also, I'm sure the Firemen and Police in the USA will feel far more comfortable about their money being invested in a club going by the moniker of Super Blues rather then Tractor Boys. Game changer know what they're doing asking it to be pushed. |
Super Blues is about as uncool as is possible.

And yet they sell a stuffed tractor in the shop! I terrified Lady Dollers by sending her a pic and saying I'd bought a couple to go on the new bed!

Once Ed has dropped his sponsorship, I imagine that Lamborghini would be interested in the gig. Absolutely perfect match, both are associated with tractors and class.

I’m not sure I completely agree. Whilst it came from the terraces, my recollection was that it was an ironic response to ‘bunch of farmers’ taunts after scoring. ‘One nil to the tractor boys etc.’ It was funny in that particular context but deeply cringeworthy after the media jumped on it.
