But is this song about highs? The lyrics are about lows. Where is the triumph, the collective spirit to succeed, where is the hope?
I love this song but lyrically it is not an anthem.
If only we knew a lyricist who could take a great song and give it our unique voice?

To me it’s an anthem which says we’ve been through unspeakable lows but we’re all still here and this is the reward and after all it’s just part of the history of the club. I’d thought it an appropriate tune a few years ago but had in mind the walk out music which on reflection it never would have fitted and one or two on here suggested it would be far better as music at the end of a game after a win, which I would agree with. I guess it’s a bit of a self depreciating sort of look at ourselves rather than a ‘look at how wonderful we are’ type song but I think it’s easier to get behind whatever the clubs fortunes are at the time.

Originally written as The Story Of The Booze. I remember reading about it in Smash Hits as a teenager, think they may have had a picture of the lyric as originally written too.
I quite like it but have always wanted The Boys Are Back In Town.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
I hear the responses about it not being upbeat enough. I think that intro is absolutely epic. If the club could get it mixed such that it went from the intro straight to the chorus, that's be perfect in my eyes (ears?)
I know this might be an unpopular opinion… but it just doesn’t do it for me.
Music wise it’s a decent track ad I understand why people want it as a club anthem, but this doesn’t scream out celebratory full time atmosphere to me? More says 1-1 draw against Preston on a chilly but bright afternoon in March as the stands quickly empty.
All for it being played at PR, but personal preference would be to have something a bit more upbeat on the full time whistle. And anything but sweet Caroline.
I remember back when we (and probably 50% of clubs) had rocking all over the world. Same era of music but was a bit more ‘football crowd’ and a little less ‘80’s indie jukebox’.
Just to build on this…
Brentford just won a big game 2-0. Three tunes on full time:
Hey Jude Rockin all over the world Freed from desire
Safe? Maybe. Done before? Absolutely. But is it celebratory rather than indie jukebox? 100%.

I'm in agreement. I for one would love to hear this blasted out after a win.
More than anything, it very much has an air of 'rebirth' about it. I also like the fact it's not over celebratory. Let's face it, ultimately we're still in the Third Division. I can get on board with a cheese-fest like 'Rockin all over the World' for promotion from the Second Division, but not for a standard league win at this level.

I think it's totally celebratory. It's about overcoming adversity to win. It even says "get back up"!
First they take your pride, then turn it all inside, and then you realise you got nothing left to lose. So you try to stop, try to get back up, and then you realise you're telling the Story of the Blues.
The North Stand belting that out and punching the air after a win would be spine-tingling. In fact it very much fits with Ashton's 'running towards adversity' thing. An Ed Sheeran cover anyone?! Marketing gold right there IMO.

I’ve just had another read through the lyrics, and I’m sorry but in all honesty it just feels depressive rather than triumphant.
If we were linking it to town, we would be saying that being and Ipswich fan keeps knocking us back, but we’ve got nothing to lose so we keep coming back for more punishment. Hardly celebratory in my eyes.
“Feeling browbeaten Day after day I think it's over But I just can't get away”
That’s not club anthem material in my eyes. That’s a song to go over the end of season highlights dvd when we’ve just lost a play off final.

a) I think you're reading too much into it (West Ham's song talks about "fortunes always hiding" and "like my dreams, they fade and die" but these don't seem to bother them!)
b) You're taking the most pessimistic view possible. Cheer up, chicken!
c) And if you sing all that after a rousing, emphatic victory then your points don't really work anyway, and it becomes the 'victory through adversity' thing I was talking about.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.
