They really have to announce a general election soon don't they? 13:43 - Oct 20 with 2076 views | GavTWTD | Let the tories choose their leader and an election early next year? Can't continue like this. At least this new leadership election will only last a week but with a mandate of even fewer people.

They really have to announce a general election soon don't they? on 13:47 - Oct 20 with 1653 views | clive_baker | It's the most undemocratic b0llocks ever. I know we vote for a party rather than a leader, but it would be naive to think the PM isn't a big factor in that decision. I don't understand how a party can chop and change its leader (and policies for that matter) and still claim to be undertaking the mandate that was based on an entirely different set of conditions. I was hoping Truss would call a GE. In her shoes I would've done. The outcome for her would've been the same ultimately, but had she dialled up the importance of democratic choice etc she could've at least gone down swinging and gained favour among the general public.

They really have to announce a general election soon don't they? on 13:50 - Oct 20 with 1609 views | HARRY10 | The mandate will be be the Tory Parlementary group ie their MPs That is what happens in a GE almost, and what would hppen were any PM to peg out in mid term. the problem we had with Truss was that she did not not stick (roughly) to the manifesto of 2019, but came up with some batsht brexit lunacy, which crashed the economy. The next one up will not only have to deal with the legacy of the bloaters failings, but Truss's mad programme. So I cannot see Labour being in too much of a hurry to take hold of the reins as things stand

Do you seriously think the Tories would seek a GE at this time. It would be the biggest electoral wipeout in history. So they have little to lose by clinging on in some desperate hope of trying to lessen those losses. For most MPs once they lose an election that is it, their political career is over. Political career, or what is best for the country..... not hard is it ?

No I don't for a second expect them to be in favour of an election. My point is that had I been in Truss' shoes, I would've called for one on the basis that it appears public sentiment has sufficiently shifted since the last election, and the party has sufficiently changed to justify one. Had she laid it on thick about whatever their differences, the one thing that surely must unite them is the importance of democracy etc. Had 2/3 of her colleagues not supported the motion (which I agree is likely, for the reasons you mention) then she could've then resigned and claimed she tried. As I say, the outcome for her would've been the same, but she would've at least left with more respect amongst the public and for the good of the rest of her life, politically or otherwise.

They really have to announce a general election soon don't they? on 14:18 - Oct 20 with 1442 views | Radlett_blue | There is no precedent in our constitution for forcing a General election if the PM resigns. This has happened may times in umpteen years, without an election. We elect MPs & the leader of the largest party becomes PM. If you want to change the constitution, then fair enough but an election isn't going to happen unless the Tory MPs or new leader all have some sort of death wish.

Haven't the rules effectively been broken today by Truss resigning? Ok, going out on a limb here, but I'm not sure technically why she's resigned unless Brady has told her that he's already had over 100 letters but that under their rules can force an election for 12 months. While I'm probably talking rubbish, there does seem to be some arm twisting here, if only in my head. Did she resign or was she pushed?

Truss may have been pushed or may have realised she was out of her depth & had zero credibility after her mini-budget exploded in her face. As far as the Tory leadership is concerned, it's up to the 1922 Committee, who can change their rules at any time. They may decide it's best to draw a name from a hat. There is a rumour there may be an on-line vote among party members, but after they made the huge error of backing Truss, doubt they will be trusted again.

Well reasoned argument............with oneflaw Truss is not capable of reasoned argument, and it took the proverbial men in grey suits to get her out. Much as with the bloater who merely took what limited credibility he retained to a lower level by squatting in number 10 for weeks The problem is what drives these odious types is an unshakable belief in themselves as some semi messianic figure fulfilling some determined destiny. Great to push you up the ladder, but much as a top diving board, you have to deliver when you get to the top of that ladder. Both failed.

Edit that - Brady has said members will be involved & a new leader will be in place by next Friday so expect a quick contest to get it down to 2 & then an on-line vote among Tory members (cringes).

Brady also suggested there could be a single candidate so maybe a vote won't be needed. Just depends what happens behind the scenes and what deals are done.

Hmm...the party seems so divided that hard to see a strong compromise candidate emerging. Lots of arm-twisting by the men in grey suits, I guess.

Maybe if Queeny was still around, but can Charles risk doing that when he's so new?

If the King decided to dissolve parliament without a request from the PM, he would create a huge constitutional crisis & it would probably presage the end of the monarchy. Charles isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he isn't that stupid.

They really have to announce a general election soon don't they? on 15:32 - Oct 20 with 1006 views | WalkyWonderland | Whoever is next will be well aware of this situation. Whilst there is nothing constitutionally wrong in the party choosing the next PM, I suspect they will recognise the issue caused by 3 PM's in one term. I think they will agree to hold a GE in the Summer whilst they have an opportunity to bed-in to a degree and get through the winter cost of living issues.
