This needs to be a wake up call. 17:07 - Oct 29 with 2259 viewsTheBoyBlue

Blew it at Sheffield Wednesday, got away with it at Port Vale. We need to do some serious work on game management. It's utterly ridiculous that we can get two ahead twice and blow it twice.

Barnsley had the same feel too, even though they were one goal leads. Straight after we scored just letting them back in through mental fragility.

This feels like a defeat. Genuinely gutted.

Angry at how we can be so careless to blow not one, but two 2 goal leads. And having gone 2 up in fecking injury time too.

Amateur hour.

I had us down for the play offs this year and that's not changed. It's been a great start but we won't be going up unless the defence improves. I know we have sacrificed a bit of defensive stability in exchange for more attacking edge on the left-hand side but it's completely night and day from last season.

And Portsmouth. Did enough in the end but twice we let them back in after taking the lead.

We are second but we need to sort out this lack of game management.

I put forward in a thread after port vale that it’s complacency born out of the fact that most of our players are too good for this level. They switch off any usually at set pieces.

Maybe all the Ed Sheeran, black out kit, fanfare etc etc has gone to their heads?

Regardless of away form up to this point there are no words for the lack of professionalism and game management displayed today. Beyond unacceptable.

To be honest we looked totally nervous in the closing stages against a 10 and a half man Derby who'd barely mustered an attack all game.

We didn’t treat it as a wake up call after Wednesday,
We didn’t treat it as a wake up call after Port Vale.

We either can’t or won’t treat these as a wake up call.

Shouldn’t need a wake up call. KM has been here nearly a year now and the defending is getting worse. He should have the basics sorted by now.

I'm not sure if it's worse, considering how bad we were under Cook. But it isn't as good as it was at the end of last season/beginning of this.

"Blew it at Sheffield Wednesday and got away with it at Port Vale" = took four points from two tricky away games. Currently tracking at 2.17 points per game over the whole season, top scorers in the division and the joint best goal difference. That ppg ratio takes us to 99 points by the way.

Up until this week we were keeping clean sheets for fun under McKenna.

We're all furious with today but a bit of perspective needed.

We won the game we wore the Blackout kit in. In front of 28,000+ and live on Sky. I don't think it's fair to say anything went to the players' heads.

Not about the black out kit per se - more about that there seems to be an entitlement around players and fans that we are a championship club in waiting, and that seems to be filtering through to the players. Perhaps they think they’re above doing the basics like defending set pieces properly? Or running down the clock?

I’m sorry to sound negative but giving away 3 x 2-0 leads inside six weeks is a pretty damning stat.

We're all monumentally frustrated with today.

But I reiterate, the stats that matter are:

Currently tracking at 2.17 points per game over the whole season, top scorers in the division and the joint best goal difference. On course for 99 points.

Should've got six points from those games though. And should've got another three from this one with very straightforward game management that many of the 'lesser' teams in this division manage regularly.

We're in a situation where teams around us are relentlessly picking up points. Plymouth are finishing teams off home and away game after game. Sheffield Wednesday are hot on our heels and so will Peterborough soon. I accept that we will drop points, of course we will, but the dropping of two pints today from where we were (twice!) is appalling in the circumstances.

But the complacency seems to be getting worse. We won't get to anywhere 99 points if we keep thinking we don't have to bother with the basics just because we've gone into the lead.
