Ted Cruz is a genuine piece of sh1t. Cowardly, racist, incompetent, corrupt and borderline sociopathic in his lack of concern for anyone other than himself. He'd be a natural fit for the Tories over here.
I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
When you think that Uvalde County in Texas still overwhelmingly voted for Greg Abott at last week's election then you have to conclude nothing will ever, ever change.
Significant numbers of people in the US have considered the issue and have decided that they prefer the right to own a machine gun with little to no training, education or oversight over the right of their own children to go to school without the fear that they'll be shredded by bullets in their third period chemistry class.

Although the Democrats retained the senate, they lost the House of Reps last week. So presumably they lost any chance of proper gun law reforms.
Qn for the american based posters. How come Biden didn't use the opportunity of a majority in both houses to push some meaningful reforms on gun ownership?

"To summarize, the Senate only requires a simple majority, or 51 votes, to actually pass a bill after debate has ended. But, since it takes 60 votes to close debate, the 60 vote threshold is effectively the new requirement for passing most bills."
Senate needs 60 votes to pass legislation unless Biden would be willing to blow up the filibuster. Which as arch Centrist Dad, he would never do.

He and Pence don’t have a spine between them. Two horrendous pathetic individuals.

I enjoyed people giving Cruz sh!t at the world series, including someone chucking a beer can at him. Their defence was "people give celebrities and public figures beers to chug all the time."

Interesting that he's finally found the courage to speak out against Trump, saying it made him ang-diddly-angry that Trump put the lives of him and his family at risk (only him and his family mind you - he was completely cool with throwing the rest of us under the bus with their Covid response).
Coincidentally, you can read all about it in his new book which came out on Tuesday. Funny eh?

I think the mistake many make is that having the US speak in a mangled, reductionist form of English must mean they have the same mindset and values as us. They do not.
Their's is a weird almost totalitarian approach to much. Where else in the west are school kids required to salute and sing the national anthem before school. Only in Japan is ancestry worship equal to the US's reverence for ex servicemen and woman.
Where else in the west would such a ramshackle, expensive and inefficient heakth service be tolerated. In fact strongly defended.
The fetishisation of personal armaments] points to a deep seated neurosis, where the police are regarded by many as an occupying force, and all too often behave as one.
Strife and hatred over religion still affects a number of Balkan states, whereas in the US it openly exists but is based on race.
And finally outside of the western and eastern coastal belt there is a helluva lot of ignorance and stupidity.... and at the risk of upsetting the righties on here... fatness. Bloated people grossly over weight. Compare the sizes of people in the 1970s even with what you see waddling around today.
They are different to us, very different.

Indeed, the filibuster remains very powerful & the fact that it makes it difficult for Congress ever to pass meaningful legislation is one reason why many Americans regard Washington as an expensive talking shop. While a majority of American voters are in favour of some changes to gun control, politicians are very wary of being targeted by the well funded NRA so, sadly, it's hard to see anything happening.

Some of what you say is true, but there is also much us Brits have in common with the Americans. Where America goes, the UK too often seems to follow a few years later, so be careful to not to be too smug. After all. I assure you that the Americans are very much amused by our recent three Prime Ministers in a fortnight debacle, the great Brexit embarrassment and the fact that there are gambling addicts in betting shops on every high street, with some bookies even calling themselves 'Lad-Brokes'. Which is to say, every country has its cultural blindspots and it would be wise to consider our own before laughing at others.
I'd also caution against using such a broad brush when describing what America is like. You're essentially talking about about a continent of people and I'm afraid trying to describe cultural qualities to fit them all doesn't work. Consider each state a country, within each state there are liberal people, not so liberal people and people we'd probably consider extremists. Where they live and work in each state tends to reflect were they will sit on the political spectrum.
The election system is set up to ensure nothing much ever changes, and it allows some people in certain places to ensure their desire to see privatised healthcare, free access to guns and an ever closer relationship between church and state to flourish. Similarly, it also stops other people in other states from preventing what they feel is an unstoppable creep of liberal morals and economic policies.
Where you are in the US at any given time often determines the immediate issues you face. Gun control is not an issue everywhere, access to abortion is not an issue everywhere, discrimination and racism are not such blatant problems in every location, even within states. Red states house millions of Blue voters, and visa versa. So it's lazy to just dismiss 200 million people in the middle of the US as ignorant fatsos.
You mention obesity - that's a symptom of poverty and poor healthcare provision. There's nothing about uniquely American about being obese. I would challenge you to not end up with weight problems when feeding a family of four on EBT. You go for quantity over quality, and this problem is only exacerbated when you have never been shown how to cook or have grown up around people who encouraged you to live a healthy lifestyle. And the kicker is - you can't even go to see your doctor to discuss it because you can't afford the $300 fee for a thirty minute consultation.
The obvious thing to say is that to fix these issues they should just vote out the people who set the conditions for such misery to flourish, but that is easier said than done. If it was so easy to fix a broken and punitive situation where you're encouraged to turn on your neighbours and to vote against your best interests then the British would have rid itself of the Conservatives many years a go, no?
People like to talk about the US in black and white terms but that just displays a fundamental misunderstanding about what America is. It's far more nuanced than many people realise and it's certainly not a case of just pointing and laughing and thinking the country is nothing but guns, bibles and burgers. My wife is an public school elementary teacher - her class neither salute a flag nor sing the national anthem before school. I am happy to correct you on this as it is a great example of why we can't just use that broad and dismissive brush.
I will say though, their cheese is massively crap.

I am well aware of the failings of this country, but as the topic was the US gun shootings I thought it best to focus comment on that.
In the space allowed anything but a broad brush stroke is going to be difficult. Certain stuff in the US finds its way over here. Most notably vacuous newspeak as a reductionist approach by those who wish to appear 'in' and those too stupid to think for themselves.
My point being were there not a 'common language' I am sure the US would seem as remote in its behaviour as Japan, or India., which is why we look on in horror at the gun culture, because it is through the prism of the US being sort of 'English'.
It is not.

As someone who lives here, and has travelled around the US fairly extensively, I respectfully disagree.
We look at the gun culture here as horror because that is what it is. It's nothing to do with being sort of 'English'.

Based on an ill informed opinion, as
"We look at the gun culture here as horror because that is what it is"
It maybe to you an others, but that culture is deep rooted in the US psyche, as is the virulent opposition to universal healthcare and the the quite open racism.
You may diagree with my thought that without the similar language the way things are in much of the US would have us seeing it as a totally different country to the UK. A thought is an opinion, thats all.
That's your choice, but to suggest that because you oppose the gun culture 'most' others in the US also do, is incorrect. Being in favour of stricter cntrol does nothing to change the gun culture.
They will still be openly bought from supermarkets. It will still be permissible to own more than one and there is no call for a ban on 'open carry'. As it it were Dodge City. Even most 'wild' west towns had stricter gun laws than now exist in the US.
i would suggest you cannot really remove that problem from the whole 'individualist' mindset that is so pervasive in the US. Hence the hatred of universal health care and for many whites a hatred of non whites.
Non of which are part of European culture

Watch out Harry, that was just a very long winded way of the Moose man saying that he's a rightie.
