I tend to like the old ones better 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 not because i'm old and nostalgic (well i am but that's not the reason) because there were fewer teams and i can remember who was in which group and roughly how each team did. I can barely remember anything from recent tournaments apart from the odd incident. When they increase it again next time, i'm out.

Oh 1978 i think. Cubillas, ticker tape, even dodgier host regime than qatar, Luque, Kempes, Gemmill, Ally McLeod, Johnston's drug test, Clive Thomas disallowing a goal on the whistle, France/Hungary kit clash etc etc

France/Hungary kit clash? Not heard that one before. What happened? Their traditional kits are blue and red respectively.

They both turned up in their white away kit, so France borrowed shirts from a local team that had green stripes.

It was a dead rubber game so didn't get a lot of attention

Yeah they were multi-stickers with no adhesive so you had to paste them into the album with your own glue and scissors, making all the pages stick together.

I think i remember they just handed you a batch each time you made a purchase at the co-op, but in the end just gave them away.

That is exactly what happened; the old lady on the till at the Austin St co-op gave me a small box full of sheets of cards. I remember thinking that was the best day ever.

Such a hard one to choose ..... one, they all have something going for them in my experience over the decades either personally where I was in my life or what we saw on and sometimes off the pitch.
It would be wrong of me after making that previous statement to even query USA '94 with the lack of England and the time difference and it's current top 3 position .... maybe those are the reasons ;-) .
I personally struggle with any memory or enjoyment of 2006,or 2012 but that was personal life rather than what the editions were actually like I presume.
Interestingly there is no doubt some voters here are of course going to be not born when they took place, which makes 1990 and 1998 impressive performers so far..I'm guessing '98 was most voters first experience and memory as '82 was mine....but my fave....crikey that's hard.....shall have good hard thunk about it.

Mexico 1970. Great tournament with some fantastic games. Great Brazil side, England were a good side too. That great save by Banks! I think it was West Germany v Italy in one of the semi finals, was it 4-3 in the end? Fabulous game & the final was a classic too. Only 16 teams in it then. There are too many now.

Due to my age I’m only really able to comment on the previous 4 world cups of which Brazil was the standout for me.

England were crap but there were some cracking teams and players and some overall amazing moments.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

....Toto Scillaci, Roger Milla, David Platt.

But most of all Gazza.

The football was mainly crap, but it seemed to be the moment football and the world started changing......mainly for the better.

Yeah, that one for me too. You missed Cameroon and their beating Argentina in the first match.

1998 probably second.

I'd just been thinking about that actually, as it was before I was into football & I remembered being in pubs with a load of beered up guys moaning endlessly on & on about us not having qualified.

We did qualify for the 1970 World Cup. We were the holders ,therefore, automatically qualified.

This is is a good way of guessing people's ages by World Cup..1986 great tournament, watched a week of on Geography field trip. 1990 went out to watch it. Amazing tournament. 1994 with Maradona going nuts. My fav though like most of us is 1990.

Oh right - I wonder which comp it was that we hadn't qualified for then? Would have been between 1968 & 1971. Or, maybe it was beered up Scottish lads, not English 🤔

Got a feeling you're thinking of 1974, or even possibly 1978. We failed to qualify for two world cups in a row.

The only major tournament from 68-71 (apart from WC) was Euros 1968 and we qualified for that as a result of topping the qualifying group containing Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. They had combined this with the Home Nations Championship.

1990, first one I remember with Platt's late goal, Gazza crying, Milla's dancing, Lineker scoring and will Maradona live up to his reputation?

No, can't have been either of those as I remember the pubs being in Oxford where I was living at the time, so can date it to being between 1968 & Feb. '70 (now remember going abroad for 9 months in early '70). Did Scotland fail to qualify for WC 70 or Euros 68? If so, think that must have been it.

Scotland wouldn't have been at Euro 68. Finished behind us in qualifying group. Didn't get to wc 70 either.

I can remember 1966, just. Was very young but was glued to our little black & white TV box! Again a great tournament. Why haven't we hosted one since? Apart from England winning, I distinctly remember Brazil & Pele getting kicked off the park by Portugal, there were some brutal tackles.

Ah, cheers 👍

Think it would have been Scotland for WC 70 then. Coming back to me a bit more now. Morose Scotsmen.

Itailia '90 for me.

I was 7 years old and the tournament that really made me fall in love with football. To be honest I don't remember all that much of it from the time other than David Platts volley against Belgium. I then was bought a video of the tournament and would watch it constantly. At the time I was living in the Midlands and (before moving to Suffolk and seeing the light a year later) was a Wolves fan due to my father. It wasn't actually the goal that I remembered but more that it was Steve Bull was the first player to jump on him in the celebrations. All watched with my dad on a tiny portable TV in the Box room as my Mum was having a Tupperware party downstairs.

It also included the greatest ever tackle that I have seen by the (multiple) Cameroon players on Caniggia

Ive gone for South Africa 2010, because thats the only one I have actually attended - brilliant atmosphere. I'll always remember the sound of the vuvuzelas at they airport and the little buses that took us to some of the stadia - and the chaos of remembering which one to get on to get you back. And being escorted to a pub in Johannesburg by the local police because we has wandered into the 'wrong' area.
But the one that sticks in my memory is 1978 in Argentina. All that ticker tape, a great spectacle...Mario Kempes, Luque, Neeskens.
Special mention of Italia 90 - thats the first - and possibly only - time I thought we might actually win the thing. Gazza, Pavarotti, Schilllaci.

For me will always be Italia90 cos I was lucky enough to go and experience most of it (Holland to Germany matches)

In terms of memories, 82 world cup probably because of the amazing Brazilians, Italians and French and I guess I was super impressionable.

With my historic cap on, I reckon Mexico 70 was the ultimate. Decent footie, all in colour and that Brazilian team will never ever be bettered.
