Surely, with a message such as this, the players just need to double down and take the hit? It's a message that clearly seems to be embarrassing Qatar, so why not just go for it and rotate the captaincy on a match-by-match basis so as to avoid suspensions etc.,

The FA, as usual, will capitulate.

I was thinking exactly the same about rotation on my way into work this morning. Or just give the armband to the player with the least yellow cards/least likely to get a yellow card. Gary Lineker would be perfect!

Surely if all the players wear it, then booking them all will make a huge statement and media frenzy which in no way will FIFA or Qatar want.

They will, especially when Qatari officials pay them off.

That would be fantastic to see the ref going up to every player (plus subs) and brandishing a yellow card. Even just for one game it'd be a fantastic statement and get so much publicity.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

They really just have to see it through and wear the arm band now - to back down would be a betrayal, and like others say, just game it / rotate it - Harry Kane can still be the leader on the pitch.

The decision not to sell beer showed how the Qataris were happy to stick 2 fingers up to Fifa and assert their power at this late stage. Fifa haven't previously objected to the rainbow or 'One love' armbands so I think it fair to assume the Qataris are once again flexing their muscles.

Lots of anger being directed at Qatar and their human rights record but I think we should also recognise the role of Fifa in taking the world cup there in the first place.

It's not as if Qatar's human rights issues were unknown. Yet today, 4 hours before kick off Fifa are finalising their stance...

It is utterly witless from FIFA (& the Qataris for that matter). They will trigger the exact opposite of what we presume they intend.

Throughout the tournament 94th minute squad-filler subs will be wearing all sort of non-standard garb to make a point at this rate. Picking a fight with media savvy players is just plain stupid.

It’s odd really, surely FIFA hold all the cards here, what are Qatar going to do pull the World Cup over an armband or beer in the stadium ? Just say no, this is what you agreed to.

We should absolutely still go ahead and wear it, I'm all in favour of using this stage to get an important message across. Take a yellow if that's the consequence, if anything it just brings it more attention.

Corruption at the highest level in football, whatever next!
Although, I didn't think the Qatari officials are that high, although they seem to be ruling FIFA !!!

Are we going to have different captains in each game to spread the yellows around? haha

In all seriousness, I though the armband is pretty useless and isn't going to send much of a message anyway. However, now FIfa (and/or Qatar) seem to have an issue with it......we should stick to our guns.

If they score and do a celebration which is not liked, are they going to get a retrospective red card.

Seems like FIFA (and/or Qatar) want to control every tiny thing. Really weird

Seems like the FA have backed down which is a real shame. Southgate could've worn it at least for today.

I really hope they are going to find a significant way of protesting today, otherwise I will be really disappointed. Like you say Southgate wearing it is no loss even if he gets booked, then all donning it would be ideal.

It's blatant corruption at FIFA, and incredible deflection from their sponsors. They should all be ashamed, but there's so much delusion and cognitive dissonance covering this venal profit-before-ethics maxim.

As if the Qatari state was going to change culturally and become tolerant for a month. A few years of gesture politics, nothing more. The only thing that would make a statement is not turning up.

But here we are! And yes, I'll be watching some of the matches, before anyone asks.

Clearly being born gay is not political, this is about a basic human right to exist.

I assume you would have been ok to travel to Nazi Germany for a kick about in 1942 if all politics should be kept out of sport ?

Agree! They could have given it to Pickford as an example.....Very unlikely he gets booked in the remainder of the game.
