I’m in Qatar at the World Cup - AMA 09:04 - Nov 23 with 6274 viewsJakeITFC

Currently sat in the stands waiting for Croatia v Morocco with a bit of time to kill so thought I’d do a Reddit style thread where I’ll try and answer any questions people have on what it’s like out here if of any interest to anyone.

Have been here since Saturday so hopefully be able to provide a little bit of insight outside of the main media reporting.

I’m advised porn is illegal, but not really sure how that’s policed.

One thing you can say is that the beer is served very cold - seems to be Heineken and Budweiser in almost every bar I’ve been to so far.

Imagine travelling over 4,000 miles for Heineken and Budweiser . #PrayforJake

England win WC or Ipswich promotion?

Was quite loud at times in amongst the England fans, but there was probably only about 3,000 of us in that section and it was a bit of an open bowl which didn’t make for a great atmosphere. Expect the game on Friday will be better as in Al Bayt which is a better stadium and also the USA fans will sing stuff too.

France v Australia atmosphere yesterday was like a pre-season friendly, absolute dross. Hoping this game will be better as loads of Moroccans in.

The atmosphere for France v Aussies came across awfully on the TV (although I only saw small bits of it). What were France like though in the flesh - they looked very good in the highlights?

I guess the alcohol ban hasn't helped the atmosphere. Will you be able to buy a beer before the England v USA late game... if desired?

Certainly did seem to be a very large number of Mexico fans at that game yesterday, is that purely fans visiting or a lot of mexicans working there? I know years ago when I spent some time in Bahrain there was a lot of mexicans working there.

There were a fair few Mexicans on my flight over from London, I think they’ve generally travelled very well. Majority of the foreigners I’ve encountered here (which is all service staff basically) seem to be from South East Asia.

It was an atmosphere like what I imagine going to watch one of those premier league pre-season tours in the USA or Asia would be like, absolutely lifeless.

Thought France looked disjointed at first but grew into it - a real pleasure to see Mbappe up close, his pace and acceleration are frightening.

Wow.

A tainted world cup over a town promotion and hopefully onwards to better things.

I honestly can't understand that.

Yeah it’s not dry here at all - been easy to get beer in different places every day.

Pre-Iran we had a beer garden type setting with a massive screen showing the build up and music playing. Beer isn’t cheap (I’ve paid between £6-£10.50 for a pint so far) but certainly is very available. I know a lot of England fans booked for bottomless brunch for the USA game, so it may be a lot of them are sleeping in the stands by the 22:00 kick off time!

I’m obviously quite keen to see Ipswich get promoted too, but just something incredibly special to me about the World Cup.

Tainted, corrupt and ludicrous off the field I do agree with, but victory on the pitch would be as important as any other.

Alright Jakey

I forgot you were going, I think I remember Herbert Hollywood telling me.

I have three questions.

What is the plastic chair situation, can you get a Ghost Ship and can I get out of my Drax contract?

At least the prices aren't as bad as Arcade Tavern

Is it expensive out there? Obviously beer is well-documented to be expected but accommodation, food/drink?

Ipswich will get out of League 1 soon, we are too big to be in here - I'd trade a League 1 promotion for a World Cup win......ask me again in the Championship though

Na, not at all - price of alcohol is well out of kilter with everything else. Meals out, supermarket stuff, Uber etc all significantly cheaper than the UK. Accommodation is expensive but that’s because of the demand (I paid about $600 for 8 nights which is bargain basement price wise), those cabins are about $200 a night.

And nothing wrong with that at all. If it's possible to be fanatical about a club side, of course the same is possible for a national side. It's not for me, but I struggle to find the time to go to games for 1 side never mind 2. Enjoy.

Has it been announced what colour shirt England will be wearing (red or white) against USA? I'm watching in a bar with, probably half and half fans, so I'd prefer not to choose the wrong colour shirt if you know what I mean!!

No I’m staying in a hotel/hostel in the city centre, near the historic centre. Really cool mix of nationalities, lots of Brazilians taking great pleasure in the Argentina result yesterday.

Nope, nobody has paid me to be here unfortunately. I would say that everybody here is generally very positive about it though - it’s hot, there’s loads of football on and none of the scare stories from beforehand have come true as of yet.

I’ve been to England v Iran and France v Australia so far, with Croatia v Morocco now, Belgium v Canada tonight, Uruguay v South Korea tomorrow and England v USA Friday as it stands.

"none of the scare stories from beforehand have come true as of yet"

Oh, I guess you aren't a Bangladeshi migrant worker who was lured there to work in construction, promised the earth, had their passport removed, then was put up in a steel container in 100 degree heat. I reckon there will be a few of them around who *could* tell you some "scare stories", but probably wouldn't risk it, for fear of what would happen to them.

Nope - the restrictions on flags for grounds seemed quite arduous so didn’t bother.

That’s correct, I’m not a Bangladeshi migrant worker.
