To be fair it's been an offence for spectators to enter the field of play for several decades, quite apart from whether they are protesting or just having a laugh.

True but this country has very rapidly become intolerant of peaceful protest too. That said, what that pitch invader is likely to be facing is far worse than had he done it in this country.

It’s either that or they’ll put him through the wood chipper. The world is watching, kind of, so he may just get away with it.

ITV just showed a picture of him too. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Tony Blair came out with an interesting point yesterday. When England won the World Cup at Wembley in 1966, homosexuality was still illegal in England. The Sexual Offences Act of 1967 legalised sex between two men. It took until 1980 for Scotland and 1982 for Northern Ireland for homosexuality to become decriminalised. Staggering to think that a lot of posters on here were alive when same sex relationships were illegal in parts of the UK.

I don’t get that comment. Edit. I assume his comment was used as Whatabouttery in order to give a defence of Qatar? Has he business interests there? Regardless, in isolation, which is how I heard it third hand, it’s an interesting comment and still beggars belief this happened in my lifetime. [Post edited 29 Nov 2022 8:28]

It was on the News Agents podcast and worth a listen - main point was that you need to work with them to progress things and that has happened over last 20 years or so - not as fast as some would hope but it never is.

Did we work with the Soviet bloc to bring about change? Or Aparthied South Africa? And how did working with Gadaffi work out? Or Sadam? Not to say we shouldn't work with authoritarian regimes on human rights issues. But sometimes it's justified to boycott and/or ostracise regimes too.

It is justified sometimes no doubt, I'm not sure it is in this situation though as there does generally seem a willingness to progress on their side even if the pace is glacial at times. These Middle Eastern regimes have been rudely awoken by Social Media, where before we even need to look at the minorities there is an actual majority (i.e. women) who are treated as second class citizens and can see around the world this just isn't the way. It can't and won't continue as the uprising in Iran is showing. I do think there is an element of virtue signalling around some of the protests though - and I don't mean on an individual level because plenty will boycott it there - but someone like Sadiq Khan banning advertising from Qatar on TfL etc is just to try and look good amongst progressives

I don’t subscribe to the Torygraph so I can only see the headline of that article. But it appears to refer to the United Arab Emirates, not Qatar. Anyway, we are going off piste here. My reference to Blair’s comments was to highlight the absurdity of our own laws on same sex relationships which was criminalised in my lifetime and I assume yours. [Post edited 29 Nov 2022 10:17]

I’ve not listened to News Agents pod yet. Is it any good? I saw they were in twitter last week winding Alastair Campbell when they knocked his and Rory Stewart’s pod off the number one spot.

I like it, good chemistry between them and as you'd expect some excellent guests - is very current as well with regards to going through issues and a big fan of the Friday show where Lewis Goodall goes into more depth on one subject on his own. The Blair one yesterday a very good listen, hopefully Keir Starmer was listening as well!

The sexism involved highlights how ludicrous (as well as abominable) that law was, since lesbianism was not outlawed. Anyone know why? Physical relationships not "provable"? Biblical condemnation of b*ggery? Henry VIII made it an 'offence' punishable by death. From 1960-65 at my school there were a couple of female teachers who we all, kids & staff alike, knew were living together & to be 'an item' - nobody cared, in fact we all smiled & thought it was sweet. *Gav's swear filter wouldn't let me type the word!

Doing your missus up the chuff was technically illegal until 1994.

Was it cos it was sodomy that was banned? Not sure what the legal status was of a strap on between ladies. Or indeed if Prince Wills' rumoured pleasures would have been illegal too? Luckily the law is a lot more sensible now, so we don't really need to speculate. (Which I know I've just done buy what the heck)
