For those who think “soccer†has grown in popularity in the USA 14:27 - Nov 29 with 3084 views | Illinoisblue | I offer this overheard conversation in the office just now: “I genuinely don’t think Iran will turn up today, they’ll be too scared of getting executed if they lose.” No word on how he thinks them forfeiting the game will make for a better outcome.

Even someone with total ignorance of how the world works and a very vague understanding of world affairs and the totalitarian regime in Iran realises they are playing the USA today! Or perhaps they literally think the team will have defected before kick-off rather than after the match and mean literally won't turn up ... they clearly haven't watched Escape to Victory!

A fair point and he signed off his conversation by saying he’s taking the afternoon off to watch the game. As did his colleague who made it clear he “normally wouldn’t take time off for a soccer game”.

The reaction of many England fans would suggest many of them think they did too.

If the US draw today that’s going to cause some confusion. “But we didn’t lose, how can we knocked out?” Oh, someone else has just mentioned that they think the last 16 is seeded. I guess it is in a way but not in the way US sports traditionally do it, 16 seed plays 1 seed, etc

Had a conversation with an American friend yesterday he believed teams were seeded for the knockout phase. Turned out he meant if you win your group you don’t play another group winner in the first knockout game. Was surprised he wasn’t confused with so many foreign teams in the soccer world series, yes he calls it that.

Although if it were the World Series surely that would make it exclusive to America.

Considering what’s happened in this country since 2016 I don’t think this country can claim to be more intelligent than the average American.
