Oooh we're still 2nd and a point closer to top! 14:28 - Dec 3 with 10512 viewscbower

Gutted we didn't win last night but the bed wetting about dropping out of top two was unnecessary.

Oooh we're still 2nd and a point closer to top! on 14:09 - Dec 4 by C_HealyIsAPleasure

Our transfer spend last Summer dwarfed the division, and then we signed 3 players in the Summer who each cost more than the rest of the division spent in total, combined. If anything Man City’s budget is nowhere near ours, in relative terms

we're spending to compete with teams who are coming down with a championship squad, their squads already have the quality we're trying to add.

we're also doing it in a different way with higher spend on transfer fees rather than higher wages for prem loan players/older players.

our squad quality is similar to 5 or 6 others

That’s just nonsense on many levels, of the relegated sides Derby had about 5 players in August and Barnsley lost their best players - which followed on from us buying one of their regulars last Summer. Peterborough were the only side to retain a similar squad and that was never a ‘Championship’ squad in the first place

Club accounts will make interesting reading when they’re available but I’m fairly certain your wage point will also be proven to be rubbish, our wage spend will dwarf the division too

Such an odd point to argue when it’s obvious how large our budget is compared to our peers

"Fine margins" here explains the difference between our home and away form, does it not?
A deflected cross happened to drop to Freddie Ladapo at Port Vale, a similar cross was just beyond Cameron Humphreys' reach on Friday. Exeter got one chance and Walton saved it, Cheltenham got one chance and Walton missed an easy save.

This is just the normal variation you get with a team that's on top in most games.

And without a deflected cross Burns wouldn't have scored the winner against Portsmouth. If we were as good as we think we should be and put games like Lincoln Cheltenham and Fleetwood to bed early we wouldn't be affected by fine margins. 3 goals in the last 4 home games cannot be put down just to fine margins.

Maybe we could let our performances across the season as a whole inform our judgements? Rather than just having a knee jerk flip out every time we drop points?

Oh dear sorry if you can't see the bigger picture of home games. Dissatisfaction is not about one game, what you call a knee jerk reaction. It's about the cumulative effect of Lincoln, Cheltenham, Fleetwood, on top of erratic home results going back to the last quarter of last season. Currently 3 goals in the last 4. Doing very well away does not make that look any better.

Give me strength, 4 games isn't the "bigger picture", 20 games is.

you don't get a player from the premiership like didzy on a pauper's wage.

several other teams have come down from the championship in the time we've been down! how much would wednesday have to pay for a player of bannan's calibre if he wasn't already on the books?

prem/championship teams are less charitable with their loans these days and the wages/fees for prem players are substantial, we have john-jules, but our rivals have plenty more.

we're amongst the top squads, but to say we're the man city of the league is very arrogant and one-eyed!

it's natural for football fans to know about our own squads, but non-biased sources, don't put us miles clear at the top...

Ex Manager wanted whole new squad. Got it.
Manager wanted 3 x new training pitches.. got them
Manager wanted upgrades to training complex including new drones. Camera towers etc.. got them
Club has bought land behind the ground.
Club has installed new advertising boards and big screen TV and new entrance to pitch
Club about to upgrade pitch to desso quality including new surrounds and underground heating.
Club has employed various staff to its off pitch team
Club has spent on a recruitment set up
Club has upgraded its PA system
Club has and continues to upgrade hospitality areas
Club continues to upgrade bars
Club has upgraded its I.T packages
Club has upgraded its dugouts
Club has continued to fund the cosmetic improvements to the ground.

All of the above whilst continuing to buy new players.

Absolutely the club are just bringing the club upto a certain standard.. but the money spent so far is incredible for this level.

Did you even look at any of the data on that link? Just looking briefly at the data for Derby, their player valuations include 31 year old Conor Hourihane who spent a month as a free agent this Summer ‘valued’ at £1.8m. Roflcopter

No the work being done is to bring us upto date

The ability to do so whilst continuing to afford and assemble an expensive side means the minimum expectation is promotion. Its not about rights. No one has a right to anything. But what you achieve and the expectations on what you should achieve does imo fall in line with what you are spending at the level you are at.

not making any claims for accuracy, but they aren't biased for or against us like we are!

what would be your valuation of the squads?

i would love us to be able to afford hourihane or didzy's wages, class players who would give us a much better chance of getting out of the league in the short-term. however, i can understand why our less experieced players are shrewder purchases

i can't see how having a better pa system gives us a divine right to promotion over, say, peterborough who probably already have one?!

we're one of a number of well-funded clubs who should expect to be in the top 6, we're not man city!

Don't think you're wrong about budget or expectations, but... we've had one of the biggest budgets in this division ever since we've been down here. Seemingly not that easy to find a manager who can make our budget talk on the pitch. In some contexts achieving expectations is a big deal.

Not being biased is irrelevant when they’re made up fantasy numbers. Not sure why you’re saying you’re not making claims for accuracy either when you posted them as evidence of our squad value

We almost certainly have players paid more than Hourihane and McGoldrick, however if you want to pretend we can’t afford players like that then go ahead. Of course, your own link suggests we have a more expensive player in Didzy’s position anyway, so top work on that one

you're tying yourself in knots here, first you say it's all nonsense, then you claim it backs up your argument...

i looked for a non-partisan comparator, that's all that came up on google, i asked if you had better evidence - no reply!

you seem to think we're a special case in this league, the evidence doesn't point to that, only your own confirmation bias, as you're viewing things through the prism of being an itfc supporter rather than an impartial observer

it's not surprising that 35 year old didzy has less of a sell-on market value than whichever 20-something of ours you compare him too, but his current quality and experience make him very valuable, hence the high renumeration. if the only aim was promotion in double-quick time i'd love to be able to afford him.

You don't think the owners have an expectation of promotion? They don't spend what they are with just hope of promotion. It's a minimum target. Only they know how long the current manager has to achieve it.. but personally I can't see it being a long term goal.

Mark steed kinda made the point when he said they'd sent Mark Ashton the money, now was the time to start seeing some results etc.

If you are a small club with no financial backing. Promotion or being competitive is a hope
When you are given money to get the club promoted then regardless of what other sides do.. you expect promotion.

See it this way

You hire a new sales manager. You give him money to finance the best sales team possible and achieve the highest sales in ipswich.

There are 4 other companies doing the same

Your expectations don't change. You've given him the tools to achieve what you want him to. It's upto him to do so. Doesn't matter if there's other sales teams with similar backing. You've been given the tools to do what's asked.
