You're trying too hard though.
Rashford is arguably England's most popular player. The nation loves him for what he's done previously. There is very little chance the paper had multiple pictures to choose from and went with that one because he happens to be black.
That was a moment where his expression was a reflection of all of us. His frustration in that moment knowing it was over was felt around the country especially when it was a decent free kick and he thought it was in.
This is nothing like the Euros and trying to shoehorn it in while implying everyone who replies to you is not capable of having the conversation is just ridiculous.
Of course social media is talking about it. There are thousands on Twitter who spend their lives looking for offence around every corner. |  |

It is really magnified on social media as well as being hard to trace. As for the press, many England players were subject to brutal headlines in past tournaments after failing just go back and look.

However, the reaction of the press to 2 very similar incidents is a massive difference. Does the press reaction lead to the individual racist reaction? Is it reflective of it? Is it divorced from it? I don't know, but would suspect there is a large element of yes to the first two and a definite no to the other one.
Compare the press reaction to the two white players missing penalties in 1990 too. Perhaps I am just failing to recall vitriol spouted towards them. | |
