What position has broadhead been signed for? 01:16 - Jan 11 with 2526 viewsBondiBlue

Continuing a thought from another thread. If it's the left ten then we've bought two this season for two million combined. Chaplin and aluko never play left and we've signed hirst this week too, so surely broadhead's not been signed as a 9. Say what you like about rotation but at 1.5 million, he's going to play.

Not a great reflection on harness.

Harness played wide for Pompey , so we may see this option used as the season progresses

Instead of Burns? Maybe, but by common consensus burns' form has been up and down and he's still being picked whenever fit.

We seem to spend most of our time breaking down stubborn low blocks/parked buses. So I think Burns and Davis will continue to stretch the play out wide, putting in crosses and cut backs. Hirst/Ladapo will be the main target man in the middle. Then Broadhead and Chaplin will be given license to roam in the half spaces, linking up with midfield and the striker. Going by his goals, our new signing looks to have predatory instincts in the box. Plus he seems to be able to shoot from range, which adds another weapon to our armoury.

So yes, it looks like he will occupy a similar role to Harness, who will still have a role to play. Marcus has a great track record for assists and goals at this level, plus he's combined well with Davis at times. But he can be sloppy in possession, which will frustrate McKenna as it breaks down the patterns of play that he has been coaching. Broadhead could be more reliable in this respect, possibly.

When teams play with more adventure and leave some space in behind, I could see Broadhead playing off the last man, with Chaplin slightly deeper. Nathan (it's a good name) looks to have pace and will hopefully offer a more clinical alternative to Jackson in this respect. He linked up well with Ross Stewart at Sunderland, so he could form a partnership with a more physically imposing striker here when required.

Think we'll be back to 'starters' and 'finishers' again rather than a settled forward line. McKenna will love having the ability to swap out a quality front 3 with an equally quality front 3 around the 60/65 minute mark and with a number of Sat/Tues weeks coming up it also means those forwards can go flat out for the time they 're on the pitch

Now you mention it, we do have a lot of converted strikers/wingers playing in our attacking midfield positions and not many midfield creator types. Wonder if the solution to beating the low block might be humphreys further forward.

Indeed, it's odd that McKenna has been in charge for a year and not realised that he likes to rotate the forward players both within and between matches.

What Sat / Tues matches?

We only have 2 or 3 Tuesday games between now and the end of the season.

With our impending cup run we will have some Saturday matches rescheduled

Also as we all know this division (and championship) are like wars of attrition and there will understandably be a view to next season as well

CH certainly has an eye for a pass. Before a signing was made I felt we needed a creator. Somebody who can beat a man and unsettle the organization of a low block. Somebody with that eye of a needle pass. A 'magician', with a bit of an X factor, coming in from the left. We'd have to make room for them now. I'm not saying it has to be Shoretire but somebody cut from the same cloth as him. These highlights are all from the same game, against a side we struggled to break down.

Maybe KMcK has wanted to play a different formation/tactic and couldn't until he had the correct personnel?

Broadhead is very versatile from what's been said. Can play left ,right or central behind a striker. Can play off a striker in a two. And can play as a striker...Hes not here as a Harness replacement/upgrade..
Agree with previous posters. Think we'll see starters and finishers going flat out. Could even see Harness starting in his preferred position on the right, alongside BH, if KM feels Chaplin needs a bench start...... Plenty of options.
Worth noting that Harness has linked up with Hirst ,too, at Pompey , laying on a few goals for him last season.

To be honest Harness has disappointed me a little, he has his moments and has a goal in him but he's miles off a Whittaker for example.

Broadhead should be a step up in quality.
