I’ve just bought some ski boots. They are tight, and I know tight is the way to go. However I think they could be too tight. I’ve just looked up a ski boot size chart and I’ve bought Mondo 28.5 and on the chart this equates to 9.5. But I’m a 10.5/11. Any advice greatly appreciated as I’m off next week and don’t want to be in excessive pain whilst attempting to ski. Thanks

I say this with respect but I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about

With all due respect; the words were in the first half of that sentence in your post.

Hence my original query.

Have skied at a good level for over 40 years. I have a very narrow foot with a high arch, & for years I went through ski boot pain. I had foam injected boots, they were unbelievable for performance but agony after only an hour. Finally I was in Selva & went into a shop, & got fitted for a pair of Lange boots. I've had them for nearly 30 years & they've seen a lot of skiing. I would hope that modern boots are easier to fit. I don't go anymore as it's got too expensive. My advice is to always get your boots in resort from a decent knowledgeable shop.

I think they should be easier to fit now. The first boots I bought were from a ski shop in the U.K. in the 1980s (Rossignols). I think they'd been used used in the Tower of London dungeons to get confessions. Rear entry and ghastly.

The next pair were bought at Snow and Rock in the 90s. (Nordica). Better but one was never properly comfortable for the first two days. The last pair bought around 2008 were fitted properly and fit like gloves.

I think there’s an element of luck with all of this but if I had the time again, I too would buy in resort. They do by and large know their stuff and did a great job repairing my ski after I severely damaged it, have fixed the odd boot clip and are generally great with advice.

Sadly, it’s my last hurrah this year (Finland). Age has caught up with me. I was not up to much, but my days of shambling down every run, off trail (I’ve skied mostly in North America despite learning in France/Austria), trees etc are behind me.

Its a great thing to do though and I’d recommend it to anybody if they get the chance. There’s something truly wonderful about being in the mountains.

Has the OP considered ditching the ski boots altogether and buying snowboard boots? Much more comfy (and fun )

Putting on and especially taking off ski boots is the worst thing in the world. The worst bit is going straight onto the apre-ski in them and then getting back to the hotel and trying to take them off half cut....

Someone needs to design a better ski boot. Might do it on my lunch break today.

RIP Sir Bobby

I have very wide feet so I feel your pain (literally). When I bought my boots the shop had a machine that heats the outer plastic shell up enough to make it pliable and stretched a bit. Admittedly this was in Italy but I am sure there will be good quality ski shops in the UK that can do this. They also heated the soft inner thingies (which can be removed) before you put them on which helps mold them to your feet. Not sure if you had that done at your original fitting but that might help too.

Thanks, I went back today and they were very helpful. I saw someone different. I bought foot beds (innersoles) and had them custom fitted and then like you mentioned had both inner linings heated and then moulded. No extra charge for that service which was nice of them. Just seems a little odd I was not offered/advised to do this first time when I went in and bought them.

Snowsun Adrenalin sports at nacton might be able to help you, they do a fitting service & really know their stuff, I had mine heated up & fitted to fit my feet, I still keep falling over tho but my feet don’t hurt!

I actually went there yesterday. There was a notice on the door say appointments only due to COVID. It looked somewhat disused, maybe they went out of business?

I really am a terrible skier, but I could not agree more - being at the top of the mountain in the snow is quite a feeling

If you ever do North America, I recommend Park City Utah. Fabulous place with lots of different skiing. Two of the ski areas, Deer Valley and Alta, are for skiers only but there are plenty of brilliant areas for Boardriders too.

Colorado isn’t too shabby either.

Swap them for snowboard boots, much more comfortable 😁

Hope you've got snow in resort, we had to postpone our trip by a couple of weeks as the slopes were very green.

Poll: What is more important to you?

Any Skiers on here on 00:47 - Jan 14 with 1636 viewsunstableblue

Where are you going? And any thoughts on the snow quality

I’m off to Italy early Feb, and just hoping the poor start to the season will pass and they gets a good base.

Hate skiing on poor pistes

Think Dolomites are better than French Alps just now.

As for boots - think people focus so heavily on getting very snug fitting boots, and you do need limited movement inside the boot, but leaning forward in the boot and getting the shins forced forward is also so important.

Poll: What level of support are you bringing to Portman Road today?

Morning,
Try and take out the insole, make them as warm as you dare then putt hem on for 20 mins....then leave them for a day, so your feet are less painful, then try them again for 20 mins. If you still have pain around your foot but not your toes, then take them to a ski shop when you get there and they can warm and stretch them, in the width, overnight.
To be 100% sure of comfort.....buy a bloody snowboard!!!
good luck

The Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees all have decent snow predictions for next week. In the Catalan Pyrenees over 50cm forecast between Monday and Thursday. Good for the ski resorts but means the village I'm in will probably be cut off for a couple of days at least.

Snow reports are good for the Alps and we have just landed in Chambery and the alps were beautifully white with snow on the way in.

Thanks for all the advice from everyone.

We went to Flaine (Mont Blanc). We could not of been luckier with the snow. Snowed non stop 4 days before arriving but not whilst there making for great conditions.
A few dramas, my bro's suitcase somehow never showed up which contained all his gear and ski boots (arrived at hotel on day 3 of 4) then we drove to the wrong hotel and I am still a useless skier. However it was still a great trip with the highlight maybe the Ice Quading.

I used to fit ski boots. We didn't size them down. We took measurements in normal and flexed position. Being a whole size down seems strange, if you are a measured 10.5/11.

Advise is to go back to the store, get measured, and look at the measurement yourself. If it isn't correct, then get them changed or refunded.

If you are going for tighter fitting boots, get custom molded one, and make sure they put the appropriate padding on patruding bones (ankle, sometimes outside of foot around the middle, sometimes the top nearer to the inside middle).

I am in the Trois Vallées this week. Wall-to-wall sunshine, and pretty much everything is open. But. The pistes vary from perfect to very, very hard, and higher altitude is no guarantee of better snow, oddly. Just as odd, red runs seem more scraped than most blues, despite far less traffic. The mogulled black runs look absolutely fearful, no soft run-outs! Checking my stats v last year, my ave speed is down 5% and daily top speed down from 75kph to 65kph, same or similar runs, so I am being quite careful.

Most important though - it is bloomin' marvellous!!!

I am very jealous! I went to La Tania a few years ago, very small, quiet, perfect for me. The skiing in Courchevel and Meribel was brilliant, got across to Val Thorens one day and that was great too, just not quite as pretty as it is all above the tree line isn't it.

Yep, you remember well. I am in the little village of St Martin de Belleville, below VT & Les Menuires. Rubbish for party animals(no nightclubs, bars close around 12) but perfect for older people. Long, well-maintained blue run back to within 50m of the rented apt - around 1.2km vertical. Fast lifts can get you to Courchevel 1850 via Meribel or Mottaret in just over an hour, and to VT via Les Menuires similarly. Afternoon run back is sunny too... I rent either via SkiFrance or booking.com; this year SkiFrance offered a €80 pp discount on the lift pass.

Where are you staying?

We got back from the three valleys two Saturdays ago. We were in Meribel village - highly recommend the bar there for apres on the Friday night, great live act!

Had 3 days of solid snow and then the weather was glorious and the snow was brilliant.

Was very compact lower down but up high the snow was brilliant.

Get the right size boots and get them heat moulded. Anything other is a waste of time. Just take them to Snow and Rock or something similar as they’ll mould them to the shape of your feet. Much better than suffering in silence. The wrong size is a disaster - plain and simple. Hire the right size when you’re out there if you can’t get at before.

Failing that, switch to boarding. Much more comfortable on your feet and infinitely better!
