To be fair I have family in budgie territory that lean that way too. I'm sure there are plenty of us that do!

We don't get to choose our family, but you chose to be best mates with a Scummer? He's got an excuse! What's yours?

It makes for a bloody good debate at the pub, I tell thee!

A prominent poster didn't know we'd won the top division...

In fairness it's 2 promotions in nearly everyone's lifetime (since 1968)

I wondered where that had come from. Wondered if someone had mentioned we'd only had two promotions from this division, which is the case.

Strictly speaking, he's correct. We were promoted in the first year that Football existed (1992) and again in 2000. ...

I thought that too, although Harry then let himself down by suggesting that we could achieve the 3rd this year and the 4th shortly afterwards (unless he was thinking we might go up, be relegated, then promoted again - heaven forbid that!) He can be forgiven though, The previous promotions from the Old Div 3 (South) surely pre-date anyone here - even Facters?!

I am sure that will make it all the sweeter, when he smacks in the winner at Carrot rd next season!

It wasn't his not being there that made one poster "wince"; it was his not knowing. Our out of Town signings usually arrive with the brochure from which they quote freely. Still, young enough to learn.

Actually, I'm beginning to think "promotions" was just a slip of the tongue, and he meant to say "major domestic honours". So he's looking forward to achieving a 3rd (FA Cup) this year and a 4th (Premier League) shortly afterwards. Ambitious lad, I like it.
Harry Clarke interview on 12:53 - Jan 20 with 1725 views | clive_baker | Spoke really well. Must be tough to come to terms with leaving Arsenal, I imagine he would've dreamed of wearing the shirt for their 1st team but it seemingly became more apparent that it wasn't to be. Certainly won't harm us having a player who feels like there's a lot to prove though, lets hope he can make an immediate impact.

The previous promotions from the Old Div 3 (South) surely pre-date anyone here - even Facters?! Actually, they don't. Half-a-dozen on here regularly indicate their experience of those times. And, while 70 may seem an impossible age many of our posters. You don't have to be much over 72 to have experienced the second Div 3(S) title win. Doesn't include me though as I had to wait till I was known to be inducted into a lifetime of support which has, so far, very much been a game of two halves. [Post edited 20 Jan 2023 17:49]

Actually that's a very good point. I enjoy reading PJH and others' memories of the 61/62 season, but I can't recall anyone posting a detailed account of either Div3(S) title wins, or even the Div2 in 60/61. However, as you say, some of our more mature posters must have experienced those (lucky beggars!) I'm also in the "game of two halves" camp. Grew up spoilt by the Robson years and spoiled only by brief abberations, such as that b@stard Clive Thomas in '75, Paul Power and Middlesbrough's bald Stavros-lookalike in '81. Also brief periods of hope that we might return to our former glories with Lyall and, later, Burley. Didn't realise how lucky we were before the fallow years. Hoping that we're on the cusp of achieving something in extra-time!
