Another thing… penalties that go straight down the middle deserve to be missed 07:13 - Feb 12 with 3751 viewsITFC_Forever

…or rather saved.

Such a lazy, cheap, cowardly way to take a free shot at the opposition’s goal.

It was genuinely one of the worst penalties that was on target I can ever remember seeing - if the keeper went the right way there was literally no way he could not have saved it.

It was weak, enough of the floor that no chance of squirming under him, and not any power to beat him for pace.

I didn't understand why, after he missed a similar one at Morecambe, that he had the penalty vs Rotherham when Evans was on the pitch - who took a much better penalty in that game and should have taken over duties

Maybe thirty years ago, but keepers now are so athletic and mobile that diving low is their bread and butter.

High and hard, statistically wields the best percentage of scoring but is also quite risky as well.

Going straight isn’t cowardly at all - some keepers dive a split second before the penalty is actually taken so going straight is the lost logical thing to do at times.

As you say going high is the best way to score.....but the difference is no one has ever missed a penalty for going too low so that is the easier option!

So the issue isn't going down the middle ?

Going high(er) down the middle is a bit better than low down the middle I suppose.

But both are lazy options.

check out where the keeper placed his water bottles - known psychological factor is influencing pen takers decision. In europe some refs ban items from the inside of the goal.

You see Mullins pen for Sheff Utd the other day, far from Lazy.

But what we can agree on, is that Chaplin's penalty was a shocker.

Awful penalty. Let's find a different taker and move on.

I actually think Chappers has been much better with his build up play in recent games too.

Neil Thompson (I think) scuffed a penalty once against Luton - just seemed to bobble in.

Marcus Stewart at Southampton I think ! Nice little chip down the middle . Was it for his hatrick?

I reckon Broadhead has the best ball strike at the club, so would love to see him take them.

Not really a highish attempt down the middle will always beat a diving goalie. Not quite as good as top right or top left corner though which no goalie in the world can reach No matter how early he dives. Clearly Town need a penalty coach with a grasp of GCSE geometry.

As do all these dummy run ups. Run in, leather it in the corner. Job done. Tommy Miller.

I would say that the only way a keeper will save a pen hard into the corner is if he's guessed the right way to start with. You simply cannot react quick enough to get there if you try to see where he's going to put it and then dive - you're feet and weight will be all wrong. It's why some players will go down the middle - because keepers do invariably commit fully one way of the other.

Couldnt have been more than a foot off the floor, and pretty central. Awful penalty.

It can’t be that hard for a professional to hit it hard and a foot or two below the bar, I mean they train a fair bit.

Another sign of the weakness that’s within sone of our key players

How many penalties have we missed this season out of interest?

It's too many already, that's for sure, we really should have a set penalty taker we can rely on

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Yep it was. And of course you can afford to do something like that when you're a premier league level player in a team that's 2-0 up and coasting.

In arguably the biggest moment of our season it's the wrong thing to do in my view.
