Charlie Brown 20:47 - Feb 21 with 2712 viewsgtsb1966

the footballer , on the bench for Cheltenham tonight. At the time I remember everyone being gutted and peed off how the big clubs, in this case Chelsea, could come in and virtually steal our players for a small fee . Although we didnt know at the time we really did get the better of the deal didn't we. Wasn't it heading for a million quid or am I wrong.

I thought that the million pounds was for the lad who went to Man City? Ben Knights I think and I’m not sure whether he’s still there or not.

It must be quite irritating for the club when a bigger club swoop in but being fair, didn’t we poach a young player from Carlisle quite recently.

was it Brown who was about £500k or am I confusing him with someone else?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

But who’s to say that young player may have developed better had he stayed at our club? Instead he goes off to the bright lights and big bucks bulging out of his bank pocket and is farmed out to all and sundry where he’s virtually lost in the woods of wannabe young players.. Lotto be said for continuity !

Was £650,000, I think, but almost certainly had clauses which meant the deal could increase on appearances etc.

Hindsight is a marvellous thing but if he had failed to have made an impact here then he would probably now be playing semi-professional football. After Chelsea or any other big club there are a lot more branches to break a young players fall.

Also under Evans where everything was done on the cheap he probably received a much better footballing education at Chelsea than what he would have had here.

But one thing is clear - being a leading marksman in U21 football does not mean that they’ll make a mark on mens football.

You thinking of that young Beattie lad? I reckon he could go far, but time will tell.

100%.

Knight and Brown were very highly rated here, Knight in particular.
Problem is, the kids and parents get offered an astronomical package that ultimately sets them up for life, with lots of additional benefits (aside from the players remuneration) that they can't say no to, regardless of whether the players want to stay at the club. For clubs like Man City, a 2m outlay on a 17 year old is nothing, especially if they have a future 120m player on their hands...thus they are happy to keep on making punts.

Knight had a fairly unspectacular loan spell at Crewe, Brown despite being a top performer at U21 level for Chelsea looks destined for the 4th tier of English football.
The only player to do well from one of these moves is Marcelo Flores at Arsenal.

Not sure he was called Matty, or that he went to Arsenal, he is currently at Middlesbrough, had a very decent championship career

This is where it is hard to argue that they steal our players - Brown, Knight, Flores etc are probably in the top 20 fees we've ever received for a player and at 16 far from sure things.

It's often over estimated how much the big clubs throw at them and their family - the main thing they do get is long term contracts and stability, opposed to 1 year deals, changing managers, etc. Charlie Brown was well behind Ben Folami, Ben Morris in the pecking order when he left and still 4 years later he is in the leagues.

The point that Marcus Evans made, which is very fair, is that if these players go on to be generational talents at their new clubs you don't get anything for them. If Ben Knight went on to become Phil Foden at Man City then there would never be any sell on for him because he'll be there for his career and you the odd appearance top up doesn't cover things - if they make 100 PL appearances for a top club you'd prob get another £1m when in reality they'd be a £100m player

I said on here a year ago that every time this player is mentioned the word Peanuts will surely appear. How right I was -law of averages, I suppose.
