Yeah, this may show the unending greed of Tory MPs and their sheer disdain for their role as Member of Parliament at a time of financial toil for many, but Corbyn...

The big issue is the rules.

There should be an expectation that an MP's job is full time. As such, they should be prevented from taking on any second job which also then reduces the possibility of lobbying and conflicts of interests.

There also needs to be provision for part time/job sharing, parental leave, etc where an elected MP can appoint someone who represents their constituency in their place. An MP should be able to be trusted to choose someone who aligns with their political beliefs which is what they have been elected for. There could also be potential within this system for second jobs to be taken on. An advantage of this could be where someone gains continuing expertise in a field they are responsible for. Imagine a Health Secretary who worked in the NHS, an education secretary who taught in a state school, etc.

The system is broken and this report is symptomatic of the broken system more than anything.

The problem lies with what is referred to as consultancy. Stop MPs being paid direct will not stop this, as it can be carried out through third parties - tge MPs wife.

It needs a change of xulture. An understanding by voters of what is happening. Sadly for most it does not seem important or ven eleicits te crass comments as above.

In commerce, insider trading is seen as corruption. The same should apply here. With far stuiffer snactions.

No MP should have a second job other than what is necessary to maintain professional qualifications, as in health - and other exceptions like taking part in TV such as Question Time etc. Having racists spouting lies on kGB news should be ended. The odd 'one off' irrespective of any views held is healthy. But skiving off so as to peddle lies is not.

If this is unacceptable and curtails your ability to earn (barrister) then don't become an MP. And if the work offered is based in the fact you are an MP then it should be obvious why you are being hired.

It needs pressure from voters. Just as once upon a time drink driving was acceptable, even a lark.

Change will come when voters take an interest and demand better from their representatives.

Much as I am not fluent in whatever language that has been written in, I think (as usual) there is some truth in what you are attempting to say.

OMG.

How poor was that. He is an awful negotiator. I can’t believe how bad he was at negotiating his rate. Apart from everything else that is wrong, what this also exposes is how competent these guys are. Can’t wait to see the next ones.

Someone offers me 10 grand a time to do something entirely within the rules am I going to turn it down? Of course not. Nothing to see here really .

I think the key point here is that you're not, as far as I know, a member of a governing party who has regularly told us 'we're all in this together', and that we should make ends meet by cooking 30p meals.

It's about hypocrisy, not about 'being within the rules'. And that's the issue to which the tories are conveniently blind.

update this evening

"Kwasi Kwarteng told representatives of a fake South Korean firm that he could introduce them to Boris Johnson — the “best campaigner you will ever see” — in the hope of securing a £10,000-a-day second job."

So why would Kwarteng think this company could benefit from meeting Johnson ?

Why would Johnson agree to a meeting, what would be the benefit to his constituents ?

Why was the approach not made direct to Johnson.... if it was all 'within the rules' ?

I hate this government but it isn't about that. It's about individuals being offered a lot of money for little work which is something everyone on this forum would love.

You're perilously close to saying 'I'm not a tory, but...'

More than just hypocrisy- a constituent of theirs finds themselves in bother and in desperation they think that their MP will help out. No, because they have one eye on being voted out and will be overseas handing over his bank details.

Just common decency to be available as an MP when needed.

Have they not also said that if you can't make ends meet go out and get a better job? Surely they are just setting an examle to the rest of us?

And another one, who curiously is asked much the same as the others

"because there might be urgent matters that need your attention in regard to any upcoming policies or regulations that we need to know so we can make the right investments at the right time " 3.30 mins

That this shyster did not ask for clarification or question that statement is because he knows perfectly well what it means.

He gives that company advance notice of any upcoming changes, so that prior knowledge would allow them to either make a financial gain, or avoid a loss.

The above is not some casual comment either. It was deliberately inserted as with the other MPs to commit them to agreeing that classified information could be expected to be divulged. Insider trading, as known outside of Westminister. I doubt this slippery customer was contacted for any visible signs of competence either.

Perhaps it was that he had sought to avoid tax by registering the ownership of his Portuguese villa through an offshore-registered company, and he was the subject of a parliamentary investigation after it was revealed that he had failed to disclose investments in Harwood Film partnership

And was censured by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) for an "unacceptable" breach of the ministerial code[28] for failing to seek their advice before taking a second job with the Public Policy Projects think tank.

Oh, and he also employs his wife as his Office Manager on an annual salary of over £45,000, making her one of only six MP's assistants paid more than £40,000.

It’s so weird how Led By Donkeys haven’t overthrown the government yet.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Is it weird? When was the last time a Western government was overthrown rather than elected out?
