NHS crisis really hits home when you've got to use A&E 09:08 - Mar 28 with 4426 viewsDanTheMan

My wife yesterday was suffering from some terrible stomach pains to the point of nearly fainting. Had to take her to A&E last night because the ambulance wait time was 8 hours as she was not a priority. Fair enough, I could drive her and got her there about half 7.

Because they were busy I was not allowed to wait with her. We both knew it might be a bit of a wait because everything is so stretched. I didn't quite appreciate just how stretched it was.

Just after she arrived she was told it was a 6 hour wait time. Within a couple of hours, that had increased to a 10 hour wait time.

I went to bed thinking that she'd probably need picking up around 2am as they managed to work out the issue with her fairly quickly but wanted to run a blood test. At the point of running the blood test, she'd been in the hospital for nearly 12 hours. As of now, she's still waiting for someone to review the blood test and they don't know how long that will be. Thankfully she's fine, just itching to get home.

Absolutely mental it's been allowed to get to this state.

Why didn't you kick him in the balls?

Good question, it was a tricky one tbh, on the one hand I’m happy for him that he is doing well for himself, but at the same time I was angry at how he was profiting, which I perceive to be immoral. Ultimately, there will always be a parasite (and a hundred behind that one) living in the crevices of opportunity that the Government creates for them, it just happens to be him on this occasion.

I’m more angry at the Government, who have created the opportunity for this sort of chap to be profiting on the scale that he is, that’s taxpayer money he’s siphoning off, it’s just mental.

Sorry to hear about your wife's suffering and the terrible wait. A and E department waiting areas are like something out of a dystopia movie.

What brought it home to me is that I know of Ukrainian refugees who have gone back to Ukraine for treatment.

I even know of one who went back to see the dentist!

The NHS was ranked number one in the world under the previous Labour Government. This is all deliberate. Sunak and Johnson have both personally got richer by millions of pounds over the period in which they have destroyed the NHS so that their friends can tie up all sorts of contracts.

I hope she's OK.

The couple of times Mrs Factual has been to hospital in 2020/21 (via ambulance) or so her treatment has been excellent and without significant delays.

But it's clear that things have deteriorated since then. The problems are, I think, well known, but nobody in our succession of utterly, despairingly useless tory administrations seems to have either the intellectual capacity, the leadership, or the political will to deal with them.

As Nye Bevan said 'No society can legitimately call itself civilised if a sick person is denied medical aid because of a lack of means.'

I think it's fair to say we're fast approaching the point at which we can say we are still a civilised country.

as i said in my post called a long post. i have nothing but utter respect for the those who work in a.e. plus the whole of the n.h.s but utter contempt for the tories, who are the custodians but for much not longer ,i hope and pray.
the thursday i went into a.e at 9pm for a blood transfusion they were great. what the staff who were mainly Philippines indians and from africa had to take from some of the idiots who wanted treatment was unreal. also 4 police were needed to bring one person into a.e
mind you while i was sitting in a corridor having my blood transfusion i was sitting next 2 ladies who had been waiting for a bed since midday and it was 2 am next day by then.
the only downside is i have to go in for the camera inserted both ends on april 15th at 1 pm which means i miss the charlton game

Don't know if you saw Panorama last night about the descent into rental, slum squalor since Thatcher's right to buy policy but where Governments lead, the lowest denomination of human life will willingly follow. It's no excuse though.

Sorry to hear about that Dan. Hope Mrs Dan is OK.

I've said it before and I will say it again. The people who work in the NHS are the best in the world. They deserve to work under better condition and for more money. But the NHS as a model for providing healthcare is bust.

The NHS in Scotland is completely devolved and free from interference from Westminster, but we are having the same issues with A & E waiting times. There is a seven year wait for hip or knee replacements so people are just going private.

It's time we started looking at healthcare the same way our neighbours in Europe do. And once again, I will put forward the case for a system similar to that used in the Netherlands.

What? Membership of the European Union?

I seem to remember you voting against that.

It is relevant because the NHS recruited many nurses, particularly, from EU countries, but that has dried up since Brexit.

The Scottish NHS may be devolved, and the Scottish Government may have tax raising powers, but we both know that unless a Scottish Government was fully independent and able to set its own spending priorities in all areas, then it is hamstrung in how much it can pour additionally into the SNHS.

What does the Netherlands healthcare system have to do with EU membership?

It's been ahead of our own outdated system for years, even when we were members of the EU.

EDIT. btw In June 2016 there were 58,702 NHS staff with a recorded EU nationality, and in June 2022 there were 70,735.

The Netherlands can recruit staff from across Europe, and thus solve short term shortages in staffing in certain sectors, should they arise.

As the NHS used to do before you and your mates encouraged people to play Hari Kiri with our economy, the Northern Ireland Peace Process and the NHS by voting for Brexit.

Now we have a declining economy, so can afford to invest left in the NHS, and a devalued pound, making short term contracts for trained European Health Professionals less attractive, and a reputation in Europe for Xenophobia, putting us a long way down the wish list of countries to work in for many young Europeans.

After the EU referendum this increase stopped

"a reputation in Europe for Xenophobia"

We have Hindu Prime Minister of Indian heritage, a Mayor of London and a First Minister of Scotland who are Muslims and a Buddhist Home Secretary whose parents came to this country from Mauritius and Kenya respectively.

Name me another European country which has such a high BAME representation in the top jobs in politics.

Speak for yourself mate but I think the people of this country are far from xenophobic.

Yep.

We have removed European's rights to live and work here.
We have brought in border checks so those who do live here now have to prove it every time they go through customs.
We have required all EU born migrants to apply for their right to remain.
We have a govt that is trying to deport all boat arrivals to Rwanda, without first checking their refugee status.
We have right wing loons demonstrating outside refugee hotel
We have the longest backlogs on processing refugees

That Sunak and Yousaf are bame is welcome but that on its own won't convince people outside that the UK is welcoming to migrants when their friends and family members here report on some of what is happening.

My cousin's husband knows somebody who works at McClaren. They took him for a spin in one. The staff have to do a six week course before they take one out on the road. The main reason is they have carbon racing brakes: slam the anchors on and you come to a dead stop with practically zero braking distance. You have to hone your skills of anticipation.

As they took the Westley roundabout at Bury to join the A14, the McClaren guy told him 'if I put my foot down now, we'll reach 150 by the end of the slip road'.

The NHS staff are working miracles at the moment and it's absolutely criminal what the Tories have done to the service. It's a managed decline and people are literally paying for it with their lives.
