TWTD Hive mind - Mobility scooters 13:58 - May 11 with 2308 views | Lord_Lucan | Mother is getting on a bit and has given up her car - this is excellent news for Suffolk as she was a hopeless driver even when she was younger. Anyhoo - she wants a mobility scooter to get to the shops etc and I wondered if anyone had any knowledge of this. I would guess they range a lot in performance as they certainly do in price. Was planning to visit Care Co on Sunday, so again, any recommendations or otherwise on this company would be appreciated***** ***** I have this possible misguided niggling thing in my mind that all disability companies are shysters.

TWTD Hive mind - Mobility scooters on 14:10 - May 11 with 2262 views | giant_stow | My Dad had a couple once his legs went - he bought them from a shop in North Norwich, but having googled it, I can't find the exact one. Looks like its got bought out or something as I'd remember the name. At first he had a sturdy big scooter for getting about the village (with a long range and top speed of 8mph) and a smaller, slower one which could go in the car. The smaller one was crap though, so in the end, he got a trailer for the bigger one it became his helper's job to hitch it all up and stow it down. He later also had another heavy duty indoor one (once his legs were more or less useless) which we could get in the boot of a Discovery (which had a specially fitted robot arm thing to lift it in - always caused a scene! Sorry I can't remember the name of the shop - maybe Colins Care? - but they were good people. Dad died in 2010, so I'm a bit out of touch with latest developments, but good luck. TWTD Hive mind - Mobility scooters on 14:12 - May 11 with 2246 views | EdwardStone | I took my very aged mother to a branch of Careco a cuppla years ago to get some items to aid her. I was extremely impressed by the time and patience of the staff member who served us, they wanted to be confident that we were happy with our purchases. In the end we settled for a budget range item and were under no pressure to buy something more expensive. Eddy Stone rating 10/10 for value, service and stock levels. Had you considered scanning small ads/ eBay for a secondhand scooter.... there are usually any number of adverts saying such heartbreaking phrases as "No longer needed" and the like

Depends on how large Lucan's mum is really. Dad once stopped a train cos he got his big one on at Norwich station, but it would only go as far as just in the doors - not the carriage, which apparently broke safety rules. An epic standoff ensued. J2's right to flag it though - portability of the chair is a big consideration.

TWTD Hive mind - Mobility scooters on 14:39 - May 11 with 2172 views | Meadowlark | My dad had one a long time ago. My suggestion is you buy a "fairly cheap" second hand one and see how you get on. After a while you will figure out it's goods and bads then you will know what to look out for and what to look for in a newer one. Range, size, comfort, ease of use etc. Or else come to Lowestoft shopping centre anytime and ask anyone there, as they seem to be compulsory for everybody.

TWTD Hive mind - Mobility scooters on 16:59 - May 11 with 1987 views | Pinewoodblue | Try before you buy. Take her down to shopmobility in the buttermarket for a trial run. You don’t want to spend money on something that isn’t going to be used. Think Asda still have them available for use in store.

Let know what you get, defo want one when I get to that age 😎

TWTD Hive mind - Mobility scooters on 16:27 - May 12 with 1648 views | MedwayTractor | My wife has been using a Moving Life ATTO for about 4 years. It is easy to use & drive, it folds up to something just over the size of a standard airline carry-on case (it is airline compliant) & weighs 29 kg with the battery. It's one fault is that it has no lock to prevent theft, although later models may include this. On a full charge, it is supposed to go as far as 12 to 14 miles, depending on the load weight of driver, etc. It has a recommended load weight of 100 kg, but my wife is well over this (because of one of her disabilities) & has never found this a problem, although she doesn't use it very much for long distances. Obviously, the greater the load weight, the sooner the battery runs out. Look for a model with the largest wheels, for ease of travelling over uneven surfaces and kerbs, etc. We chose the ATTO because it has large wheels, apart from other criteria. Don't be fooled by demonstration videos, they always show a machine being used by an able bodied person. As others have said, she needs to test everything thoroughly herself. We did this in our local Care Co branch, although the otherwise very helpful salesman tried to talk us out of a folding model, on the grounds that the hinging mechanism is an inherent weak point in the structure. On a slightly different topic, if she has mobility problems, have you thought about applying for a blue badge?

Thanks It's more the fact that she is a sh1t driver and doesn't want to drive any more because she realises she is a liability. I wouldn't say she has major mobility problems except that she is old and gets worn out walking any kind of distance - probably because she smokes too much.
