Biggest first leg deficit? 22:28 - May 12 with 2571 views | gainsboroughblue | For a play-off tie. Got to be hasn't it? I can remember Barnsley beating Birmingham 4-1 in 2000 but no others where the tie is practically over at 'half-time'.

Just checked. You're right, it was 4-0 not 4-1.

Crikey. What an anti-climax to a season.

Good thing too given that Trevor Francis seemed to have the edge over George Burley in the late 90s /early 00s. There is a parallel universe where Town play Birmingham in the 2000 play off final and lose 1-0 in one of the worst matches ever played at Wembley. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

And crazy to think back then, Sky didn’t show both semi finals so they had to stick with Barnsley even though they were 4-0. Meaning the nation didn’t get to appreciate Barry Knight as much as we did.

I do have a nice memory of Burley being at Oakwell for that match as a guest of Sky and him looking so relaxed and happy at having got over the hurdle at having finally got to Wembley after so many misses.

I was so pleased with that result as I was confident we would beat Barnsley but I dreaded facing the ghastly, spoiling Brummies.

I remember that season as it was the only time we lost at Wembley in a final. Paul Benson, the ex Luton player, did for us that year. I suppose you have to endure the lows before the highs.

I love that. It takes away a bit of the pressure and nerves when it’s other teams, but it’s still possible to get swept up with the emotion. I’ve had STs at the Towen, Wrexham, Chester and Swansea. We were crap when I had mine (I moved away to Uni in Lyall’s promotion year, Sod’s Law). Wrexham and Chester did nothing when I watched them (Chester went bust lol). Swansea was the only one who did well - I saw their PO home leg and went to Wembley. Not as good days out as our’s in 2000, but not far off.
