Correct - up here we can put the plastic cap in the recycling bin but the carton itself has to go in the household waste bin. As an aside - I only learned last week that our council at least won't take cardboard pizza boxes. To be fair to the bin men, they simply took it out of the bag and threw it in the household waste, which was good of them but anything with any food waste or grease on it is no good, so don't forget to thoroughly wash out those glass jars as well, kids.

The vegan bubble has burst. on 10:18 - May 22 by DJR | That was implicit in my post which gave rise to this discussion because I said they are recyclable in Spain. I hadn't realised there are local authorities in the country which do recycle them because they certainly don't where I live or my mother used to live. The danger however with all recycling is that it will ended up dumped somewhere in the Third World. Much better the age in which I was growing up when there was proper recycling with glass milk and pop bottles re-used. [Post edited 22 May 2023 10:18]

You can't be 25% vegan. You're either vegan or you're not. She might follow a plant based diet 25% of the time but that's not the same thing.

You know what I mean. Two years ago she was 100% carnivore. Then she went 50/50 meat/veggie. this time last year she was 100% veggie. Makes no odds to me about the technicalities of her eating status. [Post edited 23 May 2023 19:41]

75% veggie/ 25% vegan is a huge win for the planet. we need lots of people to shift in that direction. no one needs to be religious about it - it just puts people off.

Religious about it. Interesting. I guess it’s a bit like saying I am Muslim/Christian/Jewish/Buddhist on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And slightly spiritual, but you, know I eat pork and swat floes. Or I am married and faithful on weekdays. But single and bono anything with a pulse on the weekend. Or maybe I am a non-smoker, except for 30 minutes of the day. Probably doesn’t really matter.

Silly. For people who would like others to eat less animal products does it really matter? GB used the most convenient language to make a point. Comparing it to cheating at weekends is utterly ridiculous.

It’s worse than ridiculous, it was entirely obvious what GB was saying. My Mrs prefers veggie stuff but more because she doesn’t like the texture of meat, gristle and bones (open goal there for someone). I don’t think she would turn 100% veggie though as she can’t cook and has to microwave the herta’s when I’m not in residence. Back to the processed vegan stuff, my freezer is full of frost bitten vegan products that have gone untouched. As to me, I like meat, but in my defence I did have some potato and Cole slaw with my chicken tonight. Not sure what I’m rambling on about really - except from do what you want baby. Each to their own.

Then why have definitions for words, if those definitions are not going to be used? Plant based, vegetarian, vegan all mean different things. Why should non-Buddhists get to decide when it is appropriate to use the term Buddhist about themselves. Being vegan isn’t just about what you eat. That isn’t meant to be an elitist statement. Just a factual one. Either definitions matter or they don’t.

It was entirely clear what he meant. Would you have objected if he had said she eats a vegetarian diet five days a week and a vegan diet two days a week? Basically the same thing. Seems like the vegan society is ok with it since they encourage people to go vegan for January. I'm sure they would be just as happy with someone being vegan two days a week.

I wasn’t responding to GB, or commenting on the point of clarity, I was responding to Lowhouse. He was suggesting “no one needs to be religious about it” I am not sure that is always the case. Sometimes it is very useful to have clear meaning and definition. On occasion, Lowhouse likes to have clear definition on words, when discussing things.
