The vegan bubble has burst. on 10:13 - May 24 by DJR | What you say in your penultimate paragraph is what I understand veganism to be, and it chimes with the following Vegan Society definition. "Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude–as far as is possible and practicable–all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals." I knew someone in the 1980s who was a vegan and she very much adopted this philosophy, shunning things like leather shoes and the like. Perhaps amusingly, her mother, concerned that she might not be getting all the vitamins that she should, on occasions tried to add animal-based stock to the dishes she cooked for her. In effect, veganism these days is largely used to describe dietary veganism, and the term ethical veganism is used to describe those who would at one time merely have been called vegans. Interestingly, it was the philosophy behind veganism which led to things like the calls to ban animal testing for cosmetics and medicines. EDIT: there is even a question about whether keeping pets is compatible with being a vegan. https://www.vegansociety.com/news/blog/veganism-and-companion-animals [Post edited 24 May 2023 10:30]

Back in the 90’s I used to have a boss, that every so often would like to check on everything, pointing and asking, is that belt vegan, are those shoes vegan, is that suit vegan, sigh, yes, nobody else liked him much either. TWTD.

i'm ethically eating much less meat and dairy, eating stuff that is local, and stuff that isn't ultra processed factory food. that's equally an ethical stance based upon what is right for the planet.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

Absolutely, and what I posted wasn't meant as criticism of anyone.

The vegan bubble has burst. on 08:51 - May 24 by eireblue | I wasn’t moaning. I was posing some questions/debating points which, I thought were slightly interesting, well they were to me, when thinking about and comparing usage of language. Good luck to your wife GB, I wish her well. I haven’t converted my wife so, I don’t hold that against your wife either. You omnivores are a stubborn lot. I think it is the equivalent of small man syndrome: humans, you like to think you are at the top of the food tree, but you are not really up there with the proper apex predators, just half way up along side pigs, so you like to make a big fuss about your “kills”. “Grrrrr look at me eating a big steak I bought in a shop, ha take that preachy vegan” “Yea, comeback to me when you have fought off a couple of hyenas to keep hold of a gazelle you have killed with your bare hands” Just in case, some of the above, may have been said in a little bit of jest, you weird bunch of meat eaters. |
Thanks to both you and Herbie for wishing my wife well. Thankfully she is as fit as a fiddle but not so much fun since she stopped drinking. Reading that back makes her sound like an alcoholic.

Surely all that's happened is that opportunistic companies rushing products to market simply haven't understood their audience. Veganism is still more popular now than it ever has been.

The vegan bubble has burst. on 14:54 - May 24 with 1655 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | Out of interest are there any vegans on here who own pet dogs? Does the environmental impact of meat extend to pets? Dogs have a huge carbon footprint of upto 2.5 tonnes of CO2 per year -some studies suggesting more than an SUV doing 10k km per year.

I might be wrong here, but if this is from that 2009 claim, the numbers of that are fairly wonky. https://www.sightline.org/2009/12/24/dogs-vs-suvs-the-myth-that-wont-die/

Regardless of that particular claim - which may well be outlandish, it’s clear there’s a huge environmental impact in the production of their food: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffmcmahon/2017/08/02/whats-your-dogs-carbon-pawpr I don’t have a dog, nor am I vegan so I have no skin in the game - just thought it was an interesting point that I’ve not seen previously mentioned. I just wondered if those who are vegan for environmental reasons had considered the impact of having a dog.

I only speak for myself. Yes. As an aside, there is a market for these style of products. https://vegankind.com/c/pet-food

You need to take a (vegan) chill pill. Veganism isn't a religion. I'd have thought it would be better to encourage people who are trying to cut down rather than admonishing them on terminology.

Glassers isn't trying to cut down, he's said his missus hasn't succeeded in 'converting' him. And veganism is a protected belief, so kind of similar, legally speaking, to a religion: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/jan/03/ethical-veganism-is-a-belie Frankly I'm fed up of you bloody preachy non-vegans, telling us how us vegans should behave. You non-vegans are really putting me off eating more meat with your attitude.
