London ULEZ expansion question 12:45 - Jun 1 with 8033 viewsTrequartista

I read that the London ULEZ is expanding to all London boroughs in August. The M25 between the A12 junction and the Dartford Crossing goes through London. So will there be a charge for using this section of the M25 in a non-ULEZ compliant vehicle?

Something we agree on. My car is 12 years old and I pay £12.50 when I go inside the South Circular. I don't begrudge that too much because I consider that London proper (although Woolwich isn't exactly the West End).

This extension is ostensibly based on flimsy science but is a cash grab from a mayor who ideologically I tend to support on most matters, but practically is a complete mess. I can't wait til he's gone.

Importantly, the help available is only for a really small slice (those on benefits etc.). There's no help to move to a new car for people who live pay-cheque to pay-cheque. Which, as most people know, is the majority of young people who decided to live and work in London. My choices, at the end of August, are:

- Sell my car (now worth less down here) and buy a second hand ULEZ compliant one (now more expensive down here)
- Buy a new car (pricey, and on finance even more so)
- Move (not feasible atm)
- Stop driving (a lot of freedom in driving when you live this far out)

None of those are optimal choices. I am biased here, but I think it's a joke. Incentivise me better or feck off.

I've stayed away since those that must be obeyed piped up, not worth the hassle.

Khan reckons only one in ten people are affected, you just know that a lot of these one in ten are going to be people on low wage - and dare I suggest they might be carers or NHS workers - or small businessmen trying to keep it together.

Like you, many can't afford to change their car just like that, so in effect it isn't fit for purpose, all it's doing is fining you for not being able to afford a new car.

.......and as I said earlier - it would have been far more sensible to simply let things take their course and wait for the one in ten cars to hit the scrap heap.

It's a cash grab baby!

Exactly. They aren't stopping you for polluting, they are just charging you to pollute.

It's been completely railroaded through, criminal i tell ya.

Khan reckons it only affects one in ten motorists - which I find hard to believe, but if this is the case then in a few years when the one in ten cars are scrapped it's problem solved and no need to have spent billions on the infrastructure.

Side note - the most polluted part of London is actually the London Underground network.

I'm sympathetic to your point that people with less money will face more acute negative impacts.

With that context, my genuine question to you is: If we agree(or pretend to agree) that reducing emissions within urban zones like London is important, do you have an alternative solution?

Also note, I don't think you have to have an alternative opinion to express your previous points. I wouldn't want that inferred.

I would wait for the one in ten cars that are failing to become extinct.

The biggest problems for motorists regarding the ULEZ, is the 20mph zones everywhere within.
Cameras everywhere watching your every move, especially watching speeding, traffic light junctions, pedestrian crossings, cycle lanes, illegal parking and the dreaded yellow box junction cameras that issue fines once a tyre touches a yellow line and stops.
The big revenue is made from inside the ULEZ Zone not the charge to enter.

No I think I understood that you were blaming members of rhe community for buying their social housing - i just place the blame for that loss of housing stock with the architects of the right to buy policy - not those who bought their homes.

Similarly the broad socio economic policies set by governments can encourage individuals to act in a way that leads to gentrification of an area. A vibrant diverse area becomes appealing....folk buy into it...rents increase/squatters get moved on....the people that created the original vibe get priced out.
I think individuals have to take responsibility for their actions though. Let's face it the "but what can you do " attitude has enabled the post Thatcher decimation of anything resembling a connected, coherent society.

The poorer in society are likely to live in the areas which suffer from the most air pollution. Given 90% don't pay anything and a lot of that pollution is imported from outside the City by people travelling into it I think they are probably doing fairly well from the policy.

Interesting that you want to place a charge on something that is less polluting - it would surely just mean everyone moves back to petrol which is allowed within the ULEZ and would be more polluting than electric vehicles.

Interesting article on care workers being priced out of caring by ULEZ on BBC London just now about the impact on low paid key workers.

The absurdity of it is that Heathrow will be within it I believe.

Good job there isn't anything polluting in that area...

Makes driving to Heathrow for pickups very, very expensive - £12.50 plus £5 for terminal plus parking charges, which are obscene anyway! And jumping on the train isn't exactly easy unless you are in London, so won't even drive people to use public transport

Unless I’m missing something it seems like a tax on the poor/less well off who are less likely to be able to afford a modern compliant vehicle?

It seems likely to force those less affluent off the road as an additional cost. The wealthy will just pay it and continue tailgating people round London in their Range Rover Sports.

You are missing something, it’s a tax on everyone irrelevant of wealth. I doubt wealthy people want to pay it as much as less wealthy people! The fact wealthy can afford it is neither here nor there, it’s still another bloody tax.

You are onto something here.

The whole agenda is to transfer more wealth and power from Joe Pleb to those in charge.

Our ability to travel, to afford nice things, is being deliberately curtailed.

The manner in which ULEZ has been implemented is exactly the type of thing that has enabled fully embedded Tory establishment figures to be able to present themselves as anti establishment figures speaking for the ignored in society.

It's not though is it when wealthy people are more likely to afford a car that us ULEZ compliant.

If Khan's stats are right then 10% of vehicles are liable for the charge, they're older cars and will be disproportionately owned by poorer people. I don't see many skint folk driving Tesla's.
