Second club? 12:18 - Jun 8 with 18371 views | BrettenhamBlue | Just wondering if anyone here actively supports a second club? I've been following the fortunes of Sheffield FC last couple of seasons (worlds oldest club) ...in Northern Premier East Division...

Second club? on 21:26 - Jun 9 by DJR | I have a soft spot for clubs where, or near where, I have lived or studied. One of those is Millwall, along with Leeds and Brighton. And because my in-laws are Evertonians, I also like to see them do well. But I wouldn't say I support them. [Post edited 9 Jun 2023 21:27]

Second club? on 20:42 - Jun 9 by Mullet | I do not understand the concept in any way shape or form. Each to their own, but this isn't like popping to Sainsburys when Tesco isn't convenient. If it's not Ipswich I'm only interested in seeing people fail generally speaking. |
It’s this. If you support more than one club you’re a fan of the sport but on a different level to other fans who only support and are devoted to one club, well, in my opinion anyway. I fully support those who try to support smaller grass roots local clubs, especially given the rising cost of professional sport but you can only truly have love for one club.
Second club? on 07:25 - Jun 11 with 2067 views | ElephantintheRoom | I used to follow Bristol City and Bristol Rovers for a few decades from afar after watching them over a 5 yr period whilst at Uni. In recent years I have gone to Cambridge from time to time to remind myself what having a local football club is like - and most seasons i am quietly rooting for whatever team the overblown ‘English Clubs” ere playing in the Chumps League. Last night for example I was an Inter fan.

Second club? on 12:52 - Jun 10 by BarcaBlue | I left Northgate early 80s and nobody I knew had a second team, must have been a short lived blip. |
Same with me, and I left in 1978.
Second club? on 08:29 - Jun 11 with 2023 views | DJR | Widening the debate, I have no interest in watching teams other than Ipswich, whether on TV or in person. Because of this I have never had a Sky or BT subscription, and sign up on Now TV to watch Ipswich games. And I haven't been to a game not involving Ipswich for well over thirty years. The only exceptions for me are the Champions League Final (which happens to be free) and the latter stages of the World Cup, where the contrasting styles and greater quality mean the games are worth watching. And I must say that I found last night's match fairly turgid with no skin in the game. [Post edited 11 Jun 2023 8:51]

Second club? on 19:58 - Jun 10 by Chondzoresk | I used to work in Portsmouth, subsequently worked with Pompey fans and took in several games in the 1990s. So, I always look at their results. Thankfully most of their fans are better than those that have posted here. Don’t tar them all as idiots. As a side note they always welcomed me as a Town fan. |
I think you have shown an advantage in this debate, if you and your Pompey friends had no empathy for the other's team then you have less appreciation and understanding of them. Comparing and contrasting can be done clinically about football in general but most of the enjoyment (and anguish) of the sport comes not from the universals but the particulars.

That seems perfectly normal and healthy to me. I don’t see how you can live in other places, be part of the community that has a football club at the centre of that community and NOT in some small way become part of it. Maybe there are limits though. I could see myself living somewhere like Portsmouth and going to some of their matches, but probably wouldn’t do the same if I lived in Norwich. But even then I’m not sure. ITFC will always come first, as that bond with you club is special, but I loved football before I ever saw my first Town match and football is ultimately what it’s about for me. As an aside, that’s why I love going to watch a local match when I’m away on work or holiday. It’s why I always watch my local teams, be they in the 1st or 7th tier - doesn’t really matter to me

“You can only truly have love for one” That’s just not true at all. Or at least doesn’t have to be. Just like as a parent you will love a second child as much as the first, it’s not a fixed amount of love that has to be shared out. And arguably, Ipswich is my second club after Hibs but the one I love the most. Don’t tell Hibs that.

Second club? on 22:05 - Jun 8 by lizzibee | I'll admit I do. I went to Uni in south London in the early 90's and couldn't get back to Ipswich for games as often as I liked so walked the ten minutes to watch Millwall and followed ever since. Same, but slightly lesser for Newcastle when I studied there. Yes, I have their shirt but when it comes to the two teams playing its Ipswich every day but really want Millwall to do well also. A fantastic club |
Millwall for me through family connections. And Barcelona, having watched the greatest club side ever live at the Camp Nou with the likes of Messi, Neymar, Inesta, Xavi etc etc etc

Yes, there are a few teams that I follow, but nothing can compare to my love for Ipswich Town. When I first started watching and follow english football I was undecided between Ipswich and Tranmere Rovers (!!, they were actually quite good for a while in the 90s). However, the more I read and learnt about Ipswich I soon fell in love with the team and club. Kiwomya was my early favourite player. In Italy I supported Vicenza for a few years, when they were really good under Francesco Guidolin. Out of the top teams in England, Liverpool is the only team I like somewhat, but I am not an active supporter. I enjoy small teams causing upsets, like Brighton, Brentford and Leicester (before their downfall). City, Barca, Inter and the Champions League in general I find very boring (but that will change once Town get in there). COYB!

I think the family analogy is a misnomer, it’s one family. That’s what a football club is, one family. It’s sacrilege in football to love more than one. No season ticket holders i know who travel up and down the country have affection for any club other than their own. If you have affection for another other than Town, it’s just a very different level of following and supporting the club compared to others who don’t in my view.

Surely the one family and keeping all the affection within that one family is a Nodge thing ?

Second club? on 20:34 - Jun 9 by itfcsuth | Town is always my numero uno. However, my closest friend plays League 1 football so have followed which ever team he has played at - ironically at Plymouth last season which made it a bizarre one. No one really in England otherwise but watch a lot of football on the continent and have a couple of teams I like to follow: - RB Salzburg - RB Leipzig - Bodo/Glimt |
A bit like you, I quite like to 'follow' The City Group clubs, as well as the Red Bull Group clubs. Seem to be quite fascinated with how it all works. Also FC Vaduz who are technically from Lichtenstein but play as a 'guest' club in Switzerland as they don't have their own league system.

That's what happened with me. Woodbridge born and bred, came to Uni at Manchester 1974 and wanted to go to games at a club that needed my money, so went to Stockport County (not Utd or City) - div 4 in those days and got hooked. Ended up living up here, in Stockport and have been to far more County games than Town over my life. I feel like I can fully support both as they are in different divisions (and when for a brief time they were in the same I always supported Town when they played so I guess I've not been disloyal to my roots). The most important thing for me is that when I was a kid, I was brought up to support my local team unlike friends who adopted the successful clubs. Many were "Leeds supporters" (for a while!). And we have done the same. in my family. My daughter is County through and through (but also wants Town to do well). And for those of you who haven't enjoyed trips to the back of beyond in League 1, spare a thought for her, whose friends are mostly armchair City fans (that's the default team in the South Manchester conurbation). While they were lauding premier league success, she was travelling to the likes of Guiseley and Brackley in NLN to watch awful games that County lost. I have done a bit of that too - there was village we went to in the FA trophy last year. Needham something... But maybe most committed of all - Dover Athletic away (via the drinks aisle at the Calais hypermarket, mind!). So have I defected? I don't really think so - I'm checking for Town on flash scores every ten minutes at Edgeley Park on match days.
