Cricket on 12:29 - Jul 7 by XYZ | You're entitled to your opinion - the stats don't agree with you big time. The question wasn't about "Bairstow pre-injury". Bairstow - career average 36.88 Head - career average 46.41 |
Only Root for us has a better average than that, and Head isn't even their best batsman. Reinforces my point that they are better than us player for player. Find it odd anyone would argue otherwise to be honest, to me it's pretty clear that they have better test cricketers than us.

Cricket on 12:30 - Jul 7 by Herbivore | Agar or Lyon. Either way, it ends up being 8 Aussies in that line up and Root only gets in by dropping down the order (and on current form you could make a case for Head at 5 if you wanted to). And we're currently playing with an unfit Stokes, who is literally half the player a fit Stokes is. |
Warner. Lol. | | | |

You were arguing that Root wouldnt get in, because Smith is better. Silly. Bairstow's recent figures when a batsman are more than comarable with Head. It is simply not the case that it is clear that 8/11 of a composite team would be Australian.

It seems clear to everyone other than you, but there we go. You don't seem to grasp the idea of like for like comparison, but in any case that our best batsman has to drop down the order to potentially get in a composite side shows the difference in quality between the two sides.

And Stokes is fked as well. I thought the bowling might let England down this series but, with the possible exception of the second innings at Edgbaston, it's been really good. The batting has got worse by the innings and the catching remains indifferent.

Captain is crocked. Vice captain already out. Bowlers getting run into ground because we can't bat more than two sessions. This is a series to forget with lots of lessons to be learned that I suspect won't be.

With you on two of your points. Root gets in the Aussie lineup for sure, agree it's a bit silly to fix batting numbers so rigidly in a composite XI debate. Warner also, he's been below standard for at least two years now - you could make the case for him being below Crawley and Duckett on present ability (a waning force rather than just out of form IMO). But where some England players win out by virtue of a coin flip, other Aussies stroll into this XI. Brook's been found wanting and is much too green for us to be confident he can do it against Aussie bowlers. Bairstow's a form player out of form and Stokes is a crocked all-rounder.

It's outrageously poor batting, led, it would seem, by McCullum, who has apparently told the batsmen to go out there and follow their hearts. We're going to lose the Ashes by the 9th day of the series (probably) against, by the standard of Aussie teams of times past, an average Oz team. They're not bad, by any means, but they're certainly not of the same calibre as the Steve Waugh/ Ponting teams. If I was Wood or Broad, I'd be absolutely screwing over how little care the batsmen have played with, after, frankly, an excellent bowling performance yesterday - if Root could catch, and if Bairstow was a wicketkeeper, we'd have had them out for 120. The first innings batting at Lords was brainless, but forgiveable, if the coach and team could demonstrate that they had learnt from the experience. Bairstow, Moeen and Woakes today appear to have learnt nothing. Not every single ball needs to be pulled for 4, Bazball or not. Every series Glenn McGrath predicts 5-0 to Oz; he's gonna get it right this time. Dreadful cricket.

Needed that as well from where we were. To get back to 26 runs behind gives us a fighting chance.

I'd say this is a good Aussie side to be fair to them, probably the best since 2005. Agree that some of the shots we've got out to have been really poor. Yesterday we bowled superbly and if not for crap fielding we'd have skittled them ridiculously cheaply, we've got ourselves out to some not great deliveries. That said, evey test has been close and this one is now too. We've got to take our chances with the ball now, do that and we've got a good chance of chasing them down.

Yeah, all of this crapness from England and he's dragged us back into the match. Again. I can't see him playing in the next Test though, that looks just too much for him. [Post edited 7 Jul 2023 14:35]

He's not human. Ridiculous how he can go up through the gears like that when not fit and singlehandedly change a game. Despite a small lead, Aussies will be feeling that the momentum is against them a bit after we bludgeoned 100 runs for the final three wickets post-lunch. Great little cameo from Wood. If we drop anymore regulation catches this afternoon though I might lose my sh!t.

Maybe don't watch..... But in all seriousness, we have a chance. Momentum has shifted. we bowled well, if we can keep hold of the catches, you can see them being 3/4 down tonight. Have to make early inroads though. Hope no one had tickets for Day 4....

Yeah, the batting line-up is very good - which makes our bowling yesterday all the more impressive (and today's shenanigans even more annoying) Not convinced by the bowling though - Starc and Cummins both very good (Starc was berserk at Edgbaston), but Boland is filler; Hazelwood has had a poor series, and Lyon has been crocked for a test and a bit.... Skittle them for 200 here and it's just, just about do-able; on paper, at least - however, this batting line-up, Stokes aside, look shot - and Stokes appears to be held together with gaffer tape. Grrrr. This series should be 1-1 at worst, perhaps 2-0 to us - and we really, really, should have had a decent 1st innings lead today. [Post edited 7 Jul 2023 15:21]

Dan Lawrence should have been picked over Moeen for this test, he's on fire right now. Dropped from England and pitched up at Edgbaston to knock a match winning innings for Essex, even took a wicket. Last red ball game against Warks scored 125, averages 56 for the season in that format. Plus Lawrence bowling Aussies out with his bowling action is pure Bazball vibes.
