I wonder who took the official photos of our players on the Club website? 15:02 - Jul 28 with 9423 views | Ryorry | They're terrible - not only un-lifelike & unflattering, but also look like the heads were photoshopped onto the bodies! Looks like s/he also really, really upset Martyn Pert ... https://www.itfc.co.uk/teams

I wonder who took the official photos of our players on the Club website? on 17:21 - Jul 29 by Cheltenham_Blue | “That and the fact that I could have done a better job of cutting out those ears in Photoshop 4 back in the 90s, using magic wand lassoo, fiddling around with sensitivity, and layer masking.” Which proves my point. None of that is how cut outs are done. They are done in the studio, not in photoshop. The point is, for all the posts aimed at the photographer, no one has a clue what images they supplied the club, nor why the club used these. Any good photographer will have supplied the club with multiple images of the players, in a variety of poses, which the club would then have used how they see fit, the photographer doesn’t just paste them up on the team page, they just supply what the client asks for and the club do the rest. I know our photographer is very very good at their job. [Post edited 29 Jul 2023 17:53]

OK, so are you able to agree with nearly everyone else that, as the user experiences them, they look laughably bad? Nothing to do with whether or not the end user is a photography or graphic design professional, or diagnosing whether it was error by the photographer, the graphic/Web designer, or Management instruction. They Just Look Laughably Bad!

Well of course I'd say this, but I think Colchester's are as good as anyone's. They are not consistent in the way they're lit, but the photo was taken from the correct distance and the outlines of ears and hair are exact. (These are last season's photos for the most part, so I guess they could still mess things up with the new kit.) https://www.cu-fc.com/fixtures/first-team/ When we have photos taken at work, we get to O.K. them before they're shoved online. I'm pretty sure half Town's women's team, without being particularly vain, would have said 'please could you have another go?'. [Post edited 30 Jul 2023 12:42]

I wonder who took the official photos of our players on the Club website? on 15:17 - Jul 29 by Cheltenham_Blue | Look at all the photographic ‘experts’ on this thread. How many of you have EVER worked commercially with a client, or have any idea what a ‘cut out’ is. The player pics are very clearly what’s been asked for the the commercial director and ‘lack depth’, (which has nothing to do with lens choice), so the club can use them for multiple things. Lens choice absolutely does affect depth. Take a photo of yourself with the zoom lens on your phone from arms' length, then the wide one.

Not in regards to what you were talking about it doesn’t. I’m a professional photographer with well over 20 years experience, and now a senior lecturer with a PhD in the subject. So you won’t mind if I ignore your iPhone analogy, but do let me know what your job is so I can tell you that you’re doing it wrong. “Depth” caused by the use of light and shadow, “depth of field” and “lens compression” caused by lens and aperture choice are NOT the same thing. I wonder who took the official photos of our players on the Club website? on 22:09 - Jul 29 by Ryorry | If you refer back to an earlier post of mine, you'll see I said "whatever the reason for these poor-quality photos, it seems out of keeping with Gamechangers' welcome professionalism in all other areas since they took over the Club, and therefore all the more disappointing." The Club should have organised this better - had someone 'proofread' the photos as they appeared on the website, seen how they came across as so bad (at least on computers/laptops) & had a different set of photos taken if necessary. For people not already fans or otherwise connected to ITFC, they can literally be the 'face' of the club, the first thing people see when they look us up. Why spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar & give such a poor first impression? The cost of retaking would be peanuts in comparison with the millions spent on infrastructure recently. |
And reading your OP. You’re clearly blaming the photographer. But. The quality of the images are neither here nor there, what’s irked me is multiple posters commenting when the most they know about photography is at a hobbyist level or their iPhone. It’s really much more complex than clicking a button, and when working for a client you deliver what the client wants nothing more, nothing less. It’s ironic that some posters have said that the one of Hirst is the best, but to my eye, that’s one of the worst.

Perhaps get off your high horse, stop being so defensive & patronising, & re-read what everyone's actually said.

That's fair. I think the sensible thing maybe react in horror/mirth/bemusement (delete as applicable) at the result but not surmise too much at the reasoning behind it.

With all due respect to your experience Chelters, I doubt the client insisted on the lighting setup. There's just two light sources of equal intensity positioned too low and too wide - resulting in two reflections in the eyes causing a glassy-eyed distant gaze effect. With the women's faces the same setup produces even worse results with their cheeks casting shadows towards the nose making them all look like porcelain dolls. (look at the first row of defenders here: https://www.itfc.co.uk/teams/womens There's no backlight or hair light either which explains why there's little to no detail in most of the players' hair making the head outline difficult to determine and the need for a heavy blur on the cut out. I'm not a photographer... or did you mean the programmes? Whenever I've spoken to the club about the potential of quoting for any design work they have requirements for, I've always been told they've got people in-house that do it, so has always been a closed door.

Hmmmm on 13:54 - Jul 31 with 1438 views | Dyland | They're fine and, except for the dishy Marcus Harness, we simply have an exceptionally ugly group of players.
