Edwards future at Town? 12:46 - Aug 9 with 6651 viewsunstableblue

I'm a fan of Edwards, last season he never let us down when he came on, and he bagged a few goals.

He looks to be much stronger now and for me he has end product and can break the lines.

But I'm just not sure he's in McKenna's long term plans.

He didn't make the bench Saturday. Many of the team predictions for tonight I've seen, don't even having in the starting 11 for a Carabao cup game, with Harness Hutchison and Jackson starting behind Freddie (but I suppose neither Aliko and Humphreys start either).

Its a long season and we'll get knocks. But if we bring in one more attacking midfielder/winger in this window... surely he's moving on?

Very likeable member of the squad, and someone with talent... but time running out to make it at Town. What do you think?

He's either injured or off and given we were informed everyone was fit bar Walton unless a very recent one it looks like he is moving on. Absolutely gutted. One of my favourite players to watch with the ball.

It has to be more to tondo with the data for him i.e. his distance covered, possession giveaways, lack of end product etc. On the last one his product seemed to be getting much much better. Was decent I. Pre-season as well. Have to accept McKenna and co see much more of him and see all the running stats etc (somewhere I think Harness probably excels for example).

He should have a really good career based on his talent. Lovely guy too it seems. Gutted.

Everyone likes what Kyle Edwards can do - but ultimately he's 25, was fit and available for all 46 league games last season, started 3, came on in 29 and managed a grand total of 765 minutes.

If he couldn't even for one second look like nailing down a starting place in l1 then he isn't going to in the Championship.

I'd be amazed if we are able to get the 3 in that we want and he still remains here in the squad - if we don't he may do but he'd be on the chopping block

Also, not being on bench Sunday was telling

Looks like you’re right so I stand corrected. I thought he was starting to look a lot stronger and more direct in the brief appearances he made coming of the bench last season. Thought that KM’s work might have paid dividends to give him much more purpose this season but doesn’t seem that way. No doubt he was raw when he came in under Cook. Perhaps there’s still too much work to do given his age, as you say.

My two cents also, if the sale of Edwards can command a fee or make weight in bringing in a player that really pushes the squad forward...then it will be done. Maybe Edwards wants to get more regular game time. No doubt we will find out in due course and currently we are all speculating.

We know what model we are following so expect all of us will be gutted with players moving on in the coming years. However if we do good business and supporters see continous upgrades then the disappointment will be lessened.

I was going to say not sure a good example of the model as not sure we'll make anything on him...forgot we got him for free. Cracking free that. I'm sure was one of the higher wage earners of course.

Wonder what sort of fee we could get for him given it hasn't worked. Would still see him as a £500k player to be honest.

What has Edwards done in his 2 years here that makes you so worried about losing him? Hardly set the world alight has he.

Indeed, Edwards is 25 & was a useful bench option in League 1 last season. Hard to see him making a fist of it at Town, especially as McKenna presumably thinks Hutchinson is better. With 1 year left on his contract, it would be better for him if he left for a decent League 1 club where he could play regularly.

He’d suit Charlton - but given an 18 year old academy product played in his role on Saturday and by all accounts played very well they may be reluctant to bring someone in ahead of him to hinder his development.

I like Edwards - but wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved on, but equally I wouldn’t be surprised if we kept him around - if we are under the 25 squad limit I think we’re likely to keep him rather than offer to settle his contract.

I'd say he's definitely on his way, having not made either squad. Didn't we turn down an offer from Hull last season?

I've always enjoyed watching him play but agree his end product hasn't been good enough. The thing is now, every player in our squad has made a good contribution to our improvement so it will be disappointing to lose anyone

He comes off the bench and consistently makes a difference when we are chasing a game. I’m reminded of Cambridge x 2, cheltenham and port vale last season just off the top of my head.

The issue is that we were never in losing positions that often last season and therefore he was used sparingly.. That is likely to change this year. I think it would be a big mistake to lose him to accommodate Harness - who I and others have said is frankly extremely lucky to still be a part of this squad. Watching him misplace simple passes or control it further than most can kick it consistently for the last 6-7 months has become painful.

The "interplay" between Harness and Ladapo last night was... interesting.

I don’t want to appear like a dog with a bone on this issue as I’ve said a lot about Harness on this board in the last days and I don’t want to appear negative when there is SO much to be positive about.

But yes, it’s painful watching moves breakdown with alarming regularity when the ball comes to him. I can only assume Edwards must be an awful trainer for Harness to keep getting picked ahead of him.

Will be disappointing but seemingly inevitable now however that Edwards is out and we’ll be watching Harness plod around another year.

You are reading too much into it, but I'd be amazed if one of the 3 we are in for currrently isn't Ragg-Saggy/Rak-Sakyi and when we already have 8 players for those roles and he is ranked 7th or 8th judging by teamsheet then it seems an obvious area to try and move on

There has been talk of Harness, jackson or Edwards being the one to go - Judging from game time there seems to be a clear 1, 2 and 3 in that order

Big shout out to Jackson who just keeps going and impressing. To think of his journey since he moved here, crazy almost. Some good determination from him.
