Any fans of Banksy on here? on 10:16 - Aug 15 with 2104 views | Cafe_Newman | Yes their work is remarkable and for artists they understand how to promote themselves very well. I went to an exhibition of theirs in the year 2BC and loved it.

Any fans of Banksy on here? on 12:56 - Aug 15 with 1956 views | lowhouseblue | i think i'm missing something with bansky alas. i don't think it's anywhere near as clever as people like bell, rowson and brookes etc. i find it all a bit cutesy and obvious.

Any fans of Banksy on here? on 13:03 - Aug 15 with 1938 views | Plums | Thanks, sounds great. Should you ever find yourself in Berlin, I can highly recommend a visit to their museum of urban art. Whilst the museum itself is great, it also has spaces in the surrounding streets https://urban-nation.com/ It was a real eye-opener into graffiti culture - I world I really knew nothing about.

I'm a great fan of modern art but also have misgivings about Banksy. Rather like Damian Hirst, I sense there is an element of celebrity or notoriety trumping artistic ability. And from an artistic or originality point of view, his work borrows heavily from that of Blek Le Rat a French graffiti artist. Indeed, Banksy has even said “Every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier.” https://www.kooness.com/posts/magazine/is-blek-le-rat-still-influencing-banksy Interestingly, Jonathan Jones doesn't seem to like his work, but I suppose that could be countered by the argument he is an intellectual snob. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jul/26/britain-artwork-banksy-art [Post edited 15 Aug 2023 13:28]

i didn't realise that blek le rat predated him by so much. i think my problem with banksy is that he seems essentially to be a cartoonist - albeit that he does it mainly with grafitti on walls rather than newsprint in papers. i'm a great fan of cartoons and cartoonists but seen in that way banksy seems to me pretty derivative and a bit trite. what he does extremely well, and this may be the uniqueness to his art, is commercialise his work beyond compare. bansky as a supreme commercial phenomena may be a modern art work in itself, but his cartoons in themselves seem to me a bit meh.

What I hadn’t previously appreciated was that the art isn’t just the painting, but how he uses the whole surroundings as part of his art.

yes I'm certain there's more to it than i'm seeing. exhibitions bring out those wider bits - i've only seen his stuff online so i'm not well informed.
